Mother’s Home by epos architecture – A Contemporary Family Retreat in Chengdu
Mother’s Home by epos architecture in Chengdu blends staggered terraces, courtyards, and mountain views, creating functional, warm, and family-centered living spaces.
Mother’s Home, designed by epos architecture, is a thoughtfully crafted residence nestled in the eastern part of Sichuan, about 35 kilometers from the county center. Set against a backdrop of steep mountains and rolling distant hills, the site maximizes its natural landscape, offering sweeping vistas that blend serenity with daily rural life.
The 607 m² multi-level home is arranged across three terraces, with a subtle height difference of 1.5 meters, responding to both topography and family functionality. The left terrace serves as a quiet idle area, the central section functions as the primary living and farming zone, and the right terrace accommodates livestock.

Design Concept – Living in Harmony with Daily Life
The new Mother’s Home maintains the essence of the previous structure, supporting the mother’s daily routine while expanding her living space horizontally. Each functional plane is staggered to create paired spatial units of rooms and courtyards, fostering a strong sense of belonging and connection to nature.

Ground Floor: Dedicated to the mother’s everyday life, with spaces designed according to her activities. Courtyards and open spaces encourage interaction while offering privacy and comfort.
Second & Third Floors: Designed for family gatherings, festive reunions, and hosting guests. Multiple guest rooms and independent public spaces cater to modern lifestyles while preserving family intimacy. Horizontal strip windows frame distant mountain views, reflecting the Chinese philosophy of “observing the world”—finding harmony between nearby courtyards and far-reaching landscapes.

Architecture & Spatial Experience
The staggered building volumes, arranged like open arms, welcome returning family members. Courtyard spaces on the ground floor foster belonging, while elevated windows serve as viewing platforms, allowing the elderly to observe their surroundings safely. Landscape elements such as low walls, terraces, and domain demarcations address practical living needs while forming a cohesive “home” environment.

Through this project, epos architecture explored the joys and hardships of everyday family life, crafting a residence that balances tradition, comfort, and modernity. Mother’s Home not only provides functional spaces but also tells a narrative of familial love, memory, and continuity—a model for future family homes.
