Nukak Store by unseenbird: A Modular, Sustainable Retail Experience in Seoul
Nukak Store by unseenbird blends modular design with upcycled materials, creating a flexible, sustainable retail space in Seoul.
Nukak is more than just a retail store—it’s a dynamic brand with a purpose. Specializing in upcycled products, Nukak transforms discarded advertising banners, kite-surf sails, and tire inner tubes into bold, graphic bags and accessories. Each product carries a story of transformation, sustainability, and individuality. The new Nukak flagship store in Seongdong-gu, Seoul, designed by the local architecture studio unseenbird, manifests this ethos through a tactile and flexible interior concept.

Designing for Display: Modular Flexibility Through Industrial Materials
Faced with a wide variety of product shapes, sizes, and patterns, the architects approached the retail layout as a modular challenge. The foundation of the store's design lies in the use of aluminum profiles—a highly adaptive industrial material commonly found in factory and workshop settings. This system allows for interchangeable configurations, making it ideal for showcasing Nukak’s diverse range of merchandise.
The aluminum profiles not only form the shelving and wall structures, but also serve as a design language throughout the space. Paired with warm wood accents, these modular systems soften the otherwise mechanical aesthetics, bridging industrial minimalism with handcrafted warmth. The furniture—custom designed to fit the retail operation—supports various product types and display needs. The profile-based wall construction also allows for height-adjustable displays, offering a flexible framework that evolves with the store’s inventory.

Crafting Interactivity: The Customization and Class Zones
What truly sets Nukak Store apart from conventional retail environments is its emphasis on customer participation and material customization. A dedicated Custom Zone invites visitors to choose materials directly within the store and engage in the creation of their own personalized accessories. This area is accentuated by integrated surface lighting, which enhances the sense of focus and tactility.
In addition to the retail and customization spaces, the Class Zone is designed to accommodate periodic workshops. Here, aluminum profiles are repurposed once again—to form extendable tables and modular storage units, ensuring adaptability for group activities, educational events, or community engagement.

Raw Framework as Canvas: Letting the Products Shine
The store’s existing floor, walls, and ceiling were deliberately left unfinished, allowing the raw textures of the space to act as a neutral canvas. This strategy ensures that the vibrant, eclectic colors and textures of Nukak’s upcycled products stand out, drawing attention to the uniqueness of each item without overwhelming the visual field. The result is a space that feels at once raw and refined—anchored in sustainability and modular design innovation.

Nukak Store: A Living System for a Sustainable Brand
By fusing industrial materials with flexible systems and an ethos of ecological responsibility, unseenbird has created a retail environment that is as adaptable and distinctive as the brand it represents. The Nukak Store is not just a place to shop, but an evolving platform for creativity, sustainability, and community interaction—a space where design and consciousness meet.
