Nestled in the vibrant urban fabric of Shibuya City, Japan, the Ouloukyo House is a masterful architectural creation by the innovative firm A.A.E. Designed and completed in 2022, this residential masterpiece spans an area of 297 square meters, harmoniously blending nature, tradition, and cutting-edge structural design.

Concept and Design Philosophy
At the heart of Ouloukyo House lies a unique living concept: to create a tranquil living space that gracefully surrounds and celebrates a majestic Sakura tree—a symbol deeply embedded in Japanese culture. Inspired by the client’s vision, lead architect Taketo Shimohigoshi envisioned a distinctive roof composed of juxtaposed wooden elements that gently enfold the space, inviting nature inside while offering shelter and warmth.
The design integrates traditional wooden architecture with modern seismic engineering, crafting an open, flowing environment that connects inhabitants directly with the natural landscape. This approach reinterprets the idea of a "primitive hut," reimagining it as a modern sanctuary that resonates with human expression and cultural heritage.

Architectural Features and Structural Innovation
The Ouloukyo House’s spatial layout is defined by two quarter-elliptic arcs, carefully offset to nestle the Sakura tree centrally within the home. The roof, supported by 23 timber pillars and constructed from 159 exposed wooden rafters, fans out in an elegant, undulating pattern based on polar coordinate geometry.
This wooden frame is built independently from the reinforced concrete core that encircles the tree's base, providing a delicate balance between strength and openness. Ingeniously designed to resist seismic forces, the structure absorbs bending stresses through the flexible pillar bases, eliminating the need for visible braces or rigid supports. The result is a soft, open living environment suffused with natural light, texture, and organic warmth.

The Ouloukyo House employs premium materials sourced from trusted manufacturers such as Inoue Industries, Sekistone, and Tamiya. The craftsmanship highlights exposed timber beams, carefully detailed wood joints, and expansive windows that frame serene views of the Sakura tree and the surrounding landscape.
