Perth Museum Renovation by Mecanoo: Blending Edwardian Heritage with Modern Innovation

In the realm of architectural restoration, Mecanoo continues to redefine the art of revitalizing historic structures with a sensitive, forward-thinking approach. Following their celebrated work on the New York Public Library, Mecanoo undertook the ambitious renovation of Perth's former City Hall, a landmark of Edwardian architecture, originally inaugurated in 1914. This transformation exemplifies the studio’s commitment to preserving historical integrity while introducing contemporary interventions.

Honoring Perth’s Historical Legacy

Perth’s former City Hall, with its classical façade and storied past, presented both challenges and opportunities. Mecanoo approached the project with surgical precision, balancing conservation with innovation. The journey began in 2017, exploring Perth’s scenic landscapes and immersing in the city’s rich cultural heritage to inform every design decision.

Stepping inside the dilapidated City Hall, once a vibrant concert venue, the team encountered faded grandeur alongside vast potential. The project extended beyond the building itself, engaging with the surrounding urban fabric and the hidden vennels, narrow alleys that reveal untold narratives of Perth’s history.

Architectural Interventions: The Vennel and Community Spaces

A central concept in the renovation is the introduction of a Vennel, a symbolic architectural passage linking the Main Hall to the Lesser Hall. This intervention, featuring imposing bronze doors handcrafted in Black Isle, celebrates Scotland’s artisanal heritage while creating a seamless connection within the museum.

The former Lesser Hall has been transformed into a dynamic communal space, including a café and event venue. By lowering windows to floor level, the design invites abundant natural light and panoramic views of St. John's Kirk, turning an introverted space into a vibrant hub for community engagement. This approach emphasizes accessibility, functionality, and inclusivity, catering to both visitors and local residents.

Celebrating Scotland’s Cultural Treasures

At the heart of the museum lies the Main Hall, a sanctuary for Scotland’s historical treasures, including the iconic Stone of Destiny. Mecanoo designed a bespoke oak display box to elevate the artifact, while surrounding balconies meticulously showcase Scotland’s national history. This immersive design encourages visitors to engage deeply with the country’s cultural narrative, blending education with aesthetic experience.
