Transforming an Unfinished School into a Playful Learning Environment

Located in Xinyang, China, Pony School is a visionary renovation project by L&M Design Lab, transforming an unfinished elementary school into an engaging and imaginative educational space. The school, situated within a high-density residential area, represents a new approach to urban school design, blending creativity, sustainability, and community engagement.

Revitalizing a Compact Campus

With limited space and an almost completed structure, the challenge was to reimagine the existing school architecture while minimizing waste and construction costs. The result is a dynamic and interactive learning environment that fosters child-centered education. Enclosed on three sides, the campus initially felt restrictive, but the redesign introduces playful elements that breathe new life into the space.

A Pony’s Playground: The Red Armillary Sash

A symbolic blue pony, central to the school’s design narrative, playfully interacts with the architecture. The Red Armillary Sash, a continuous red pathway, connects different parts of the campus, transforming once-isolated areas into lively communal spaces.

  • Rooftop Playground: Originally an underutilized void, the second-floor terrace now features an undulating play area designed with zebra-like patterns, providing a fun and safe recess space.
  • Dynamic Circulation: The Red Armillary Sash manifests as a floating staircase at the main entrance, a slide near the foyer, and an observation staircase by the playground, making movement throughout the school an engaging experience.
  • Multi-Purpose Hall: A unique entryway seamlessly connects indoor and outdoor spaces, encouraging interaction and creativity.

Blending Architecture with Nature

The design embraces sustainable architecture by incorporating locally sourced red brick, an affordable and eco-friendly material that integrates the school with its surrounding landscape. Earthbags, gravel, grass, and painted patterns further enhance the school’s connection to nature, creating a welcoming and grounded atmosphere.

A Childhood Rooted in Freedom

Unlike urban schools that push academic rigor from an early age, Pony School encourages slow childhood development. Just like the ponies that rest after play, children here experience a more relaxed and immersive learning journey—closer to nature, curiosity, and self-discovery.
