The Process Department of Shamim Polymer Factory in Eshtehard represents a bold new approach to industrial architecture in Iran. Eshtehard, a semi-industrialized suburb of Tehran, has long served as a strategic hub for industrial development due to its expansive, underutilized terrain. For the second time, Davood Boroojeni Office returned to this evolving industrial zone to create a factory design that goes beyond conventional utility, emphasizing spatial optimization, employee engagement, and architectural storytelling.

Design Concept: Optimized Form Meets Functional Performance

Spanning 2,200 m², the factory is composed of two unbalanced, unconventional forms, visually representing the concept of optimization. The design philosophy aligns the building’s physical form with the operational performance of the Shamim Polymer process department. Each spatial decision was made to enhance workflow efficiency while also giving the building a distinctive, life-infused presence.

Materiality and Aesthetic Approach

Raw iron sheets dominate walls and ceilings, conveying a strong industrial character, while brick facades provide warmth and texture, balancing the factory’s aesthetic. Transparent hatches punctuate walls to foster openness and continuity throughout the workspace, creating a visually connected environment that encourages interaction and collaboration among workers.

Employee-Centered Design

A standout feature of the project is its human-centric design approach. Factory workers actively participated in planning and designing the spaces based on their needs, ensuring functionality and comfort. Key innovations include:

  • Designated smoking areas on the east and west sides of the building, promoting both productivity and well-being.
  • Integration of storytelling elements and personal touches, such as a free chicken coop suggested by an employee.
  • Emphasis on natural light, open circulation, and interactive spaces to enhance workplace satisfaction.

These thoughtful design strategies transform the factory from a purely industrial facility into a comfortable, engaging, and dynamic workplace, fostering a sense of belonging and ownership among employees.

Sustainability and Functional Performance

In line with contemporary industrial standards, the factory incorporates rainwater collection systems, highlighting sustainable practices while supporting operational efficiency. The use of durable materials such as iron and brick ensures longevity while maintaining a raw, authentic industrial aesthetic.
