Prompt Café by SAISA STUDIO: A Calm Urban Retreat Blending Nature and Minimal Design

Prompt Café by SAISA STUDIO introduces a serene urban escape within the center of Cheongju-si, South Korea. Completed in 2024 and spanning 100 square meters, the project explores how subtle materiality, soft colors, and intentional spatial planning can bring the tranquility of nature into a compact city-site. The design reflects lead architect Junsu Lee’s vision of creating a café that feels both grounding and gently connected to its surroundings.

Design Concept: Creating a Small Nature in the City

The primary concept behind Prompt Café is the idea of hosting a “small nature” inside the bustling urban context. The architects aimed to create a warm, relaxing atmosphere where visitors naturally orient their gaze toward the outdoors. This goal guided every aspect of the spatial arrangement, from the placement of tables to the alignment of key design elements. By staging the interior as an extension of the exterior landscape, the café becomes a peaceful middle ground between city life and natural calm.

A Transparent Facade Framing the Outdoors

The façade plays a critical role in bridging the interior with the surrounding environment. SAISA STUDIO implemented a full-glass finish to maximize transparency and allow natural objects outside to become part of the café’s visual composition. Although challenging during construction, this decision transforms the façade into a continuous frame of greenery, sky, and street life. The generous glazing eliminates boundaries, softens the threshold, and reinforces the café’s nature-driven identity.

Interior Palette: Veneer, Off-White Surfaces, and Stainless Steel Accents

The interior palette is defined by warm wood veneer, off-white paint finishes, and minimal detailing. This combination creates a clean yet comforting atmosphere, achieved through a careful balance of textures. Stainless steel surfaces introduce subtle contrast; their cool, reflective quality lightly offsets the warmth of the wood and the softness of the painted surfaces. This interplay provides visual balance without overpowering the simplicity of the space.

The floor is finished with micro cement in light off-white tones, reinforcing the continuity of the color palette. Its fine texture adds a contemporary touch while maintaining cohesion across the space.

Harmonizing Inside and Outside

A key design intention was to remove any sense of disconnection between interior and exterior. To achieve this, materials, colors, and views were aligned to create a seamless flow. The muted interior tones reflect the natural hues found outside, allowing daylight to gently wash over surfaces and emphasize the calming spatial rhythm.

Spatial Composition: Built-In Seating and Layered Zones

At the center of the café, a built-in seating element acts as a communal anchor. Positioned to interact with the overall layout, it allows guests to enjoy the café from its core while still engaging with exterior views. Custom copper wiring details create a subtle visual guide toward the windows, enhancing the outward orientation.

A group table forms an additional cozy area under a subtly framed ceiling. This zone introduces spatial hierarchy and offers a more intimate environment within the open plan. Custom shelves and a specially designed speaker add character and functional value, contributing small yet impactful touches to the interior identity.

A Calm Urban Atmosphere

Prompt Café achieves a distinct sense of calm through its restrained palette, thoughtful material choices, and precise spatial alignment. By blending natural views with minimal interior elements, the design offers a refreshing retreat within the city. The project becomes not just a café, but a subtle architectural meditation on balance, warmth, and serenity.
