RB House by Song A Studio: A Vertical Oasis of Light, Greenery, and Minimalist Living in Bắc Ninh

Located in the dense urban fabric of Bắc Ninh, Vietnam, RB House by Song A Studio redefines contemporary residential architecture through a staggered floor system, minimalist spatial planning, and thoughtful climate-responsive design. With a total area of 1100 m², the 2023 project by lead architect Trung Nguyen introduces a new living model for compact cities: one that prioritizes openness, vertical connectivity, and nature integration.


A Vision for Fluid, Connected Urban Living
The concept of RB House began with the desire to create a fluid, open spatial experience despite the limitations of a narrow city plot. Song A Studio responded with a multi-level staggered floor design, where shifts in floor height establish uninterrupted visual connections throughout the home.
This architectural strategy enables:
- Enhanced openness across levels
- Natural airflow and cross-ventilation
- Amplified daylight penetration
- A continuous, flowing spatial rhythm
Minimalism anchors the interior and exterior expression: clean lines, uncluttered spaces, and carefully curated materials shape a sense of calm and coherence from one level to the next.


Addressing Harsh Western Sunlight Through Green Architecture
One of the key challenges was the building’s west-facing orientation, which exposes it to intense afternoon heat typical of northern Vietnam. The studio addressed this environmental constraint using dense layers of vegetation, strategically placed along the façade, terraces, and garden zones.
Green design solutions include:
- Trees and planters acting as natural sun filters
- Layered greenery reducing heat absorption
- Shading systems integrated with aluminum framing
- Reduced energy consumption through passive cooling
This eco-sensitive approach allows RB House to maintain a comfortable indoor climate while reducing reliance on artificial cooling, an important sustainability factor in dense urban environments.


Material Strategy: Modern, Durable, and Sustainable
The architecture incorporates a refined palette centered around TOSTEM high-performance aluminum frames, chosen for their durability, thermal efficiency, and minimalist appearance. Their slim profiles enable expansive openings that strengthen indoor, outdoor relationships.
