Resonating Memories: A Vertical Tapestry of Life, Death, and Collective Mourning
A public tower of remembrance redefining memorial architecture through sound, space, and community.
In a compelling reimagining of memorial architecture, "Resonating Memories" challenges traditional cemetery design by transforming grief into an inclusive, sensory experience. Designed by Shan Yu and Bryan Ahn, and shortlisted in the Circle of Life competition, this vertical funerary tower blends ritual, remembrance, and everyday life into a unified architectural expression.
Unlike conventional cemeteries defined by isolation and solemnity, this project fosters a shared emotional space where the living and the dead coexist in resonance. Through the innovative use of chimes and public programs, the structure becomes not just a resting place for ashes, but a platform for memory, reflection, and social connection.

Architecture of Layers and Purpose
The tower is organized as a vertical progression of experiences:
- Crematorium: At the base, the ritual of death begins. The cremation chamber is anchored in solemnity, with a sculptural presence and gentle lighting that guide the mourners through the ceremony.
- Markets: Above the crematorium, a vibrant public market emerges—breaking the conventional barrier between the living and the dead. Here, life continues. Locals shop, vendors interact, and death is subtly integrated into the rhythm of daily activity.
- Congregation Platform: A communal space for gathering, ceremonies, or silent reflection, this circular platform fosters collectivity and acknowledgment of shared grief.
- Chimes (Accessible): As visitors ascend, they engage with an immersive soundscape of resonating chimes. Each chime holds the ashes of a loved one, activated by the wind or touch, allowing memories to become audible, ethereal presences.
- Remembrance Chimes (Upper Levels): Higher in the tower, the chimes become more elusive—physically inaccessible but visually and sonically present. Their continuous resonance evokes a sense of transcendence and eternal memory.

Urban Integration and Symbolism
Strategically located within the cityscape, the tower functions as both a visual and auditory landmark. By embracing verticality, the project addresses the urban scarcity of burial grounds while proposing a new kind of sacred public space that invites participation from all.
The use of copper chimes symbolizes impermanence, decay, and the beauty of transformation. Their shimmer and sound change with time and weather—mirroring the shifting nature of memory itself.
A New Paradigm for Mourning Spaces
"Resonating Memories" is more than an architectural concept—it is a statement on how we relate to death in contemporary society. It posits that mourning need not be hidden or segregated, but can become a collective, embodied experience within the city. Through sound, spatial layering, and public life, this project reframes memorial architecture not as a static place of loss, but as a living archive of remembrance
