Rosebrook Lodge: A Contemporary Marvel of Mountain Lodge Architecture by Bull Stockwell Allen
Rosebrook Lodge is a contemporary mountain lodge that fuses alpine tradition with modern design on New Hampshire’s Presidential Range.
A Panoramic Alpine Retreat Inspired by Nature and Tradition
Perched high on the rugged slopes of Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, Rosebrook Lodge exemplifies the evolution of mountain lodge architecture through a seamless union of tradition, innovation, and landscape integration. Designed by Bull Stockwell Allen, this 17,000-square-foot structure was completed in July 2020 and now serves as both a ski lodge and event venue. With its commanding views of the Presidential Range—including the majestic Mt. Washington—the building transforms its dramatic setting into an immersive alpine experience.

A Site-Responsive Architectural Form
The design of Rosebrook Lodge is intrinsically tied to the mountain itself. The building’s blade-like silhouette responds to four primary constraints: steep topography, proximity to a U.S. Forest Service boundary, existing skier routes, and the placement of a new summit gondola. These challenges inspired a dynamic architectural solution that fuses functionality with visual impact. Its form accommodates the natural terrain, preserves skier circulation, and allows for effortless access from the gondola—making it a central node on the mountaintop.

Inviting Guests Through Design
The lodge features a striking curved wood-and-glass façade that bathes the interiors in natural light, inviting guests into a warm, expansive setting. The double-height entry hall acts as a visual and functional beacon, visible from the historic Mount Washington Hotel in the valley below. This inviting volume draws guests arriving via the gondola into a space that feels both monumental and intimate. The roof’s low-slope design efficiently manages snow, preventing icicle formation and keeping pathways safe during the winter season.

Merging Function with Elegance
The interior program is organized across two levels. On the lower level, guests encounter the main entryway, a full-service restaurant, a casual café, restrooms, and service areas—all designed with operational efficiency in mind. The upper level opens into a grand hall that serves dual purposes: a gathering place for skiers in winter, and a scenic venue for weddings and special events year-round. This multifunctional flexibility is a key feature of modern mountain lodge architecture, offering adaptability without sacrificing style.

Materiality that Echoes the Landscape
Rosebrook Lodge’s material palette is a deliberate homage to the White Mountains’ natural beauty. Timber, stone, steel, and glass are employed in balance to create a tactile and visual connection to the outdoors. The architectural team at Bull Stockwell Allen collaborated closely with interior designers TruexCullins and landscape architects SE Group to ensure this harmony of elements. The goal was not only to frame the environment but to absorb it into the building’s DNA—resulting in a rustic-modern aesthetic that is both timeless and place-specific.

Timber Curtain Wall Innovation
A highlight of the design is the innovative timber curtain wall system. Composed of timber ladders combined with aluminum-clad wood nail fin windows, this feature provides sweeping 180-degree views while maintaining cost efficiency and structural resilience. The system is engineered to withstand the extreme environmental conditions common to high-altitude locations—such as fluctuating temperatures, wind, and moisture—without compromising transparency or warmth.

Anchoring Architecture to the Landscape
Upper and lower patios extend outward from the lodge, grounding the structure into the mountainside and dissolving the boundary between interior and exterior. These outdoor terraces not only enhance the visitor experience but also reinforce the lodge’s commitment to contextual integration. This approach aligns with the principles of sustainable mountain lodge architecture, where the built environment respects and responds to its ecological context.

A Lodge That Reflects Its Time and Place
Rosebrook Lodge is more than a functional base for alpine activity—it is a contemporary reinterpretation of traditional post-and-beam lodge architecture. Its thoughtful design balances rustic charm with modern engineering, creating a mountain lodge that meets today’s hospitality demands while honoring the vernacular traditions of the region. Through its bold form, adaptive program, and material authenticity, Rosebrook Lodge stands as a landmark of design in the American Northeast.
