Shees Friday Market: A Fusion of Tradition, Community, and Sustainable Design
Shees Friday Market in Sharjah blends tradition and modernity with open-air souks, sustainable design, local materials, community focus, and scenic mountain views.
A Cultural and Architectural Landmark
Architects: Shape Architecture Practice + Research
Nestled in the tranquil farming village of Shees, the Shees Friday Market represents a harmonious dialogue between tradition and contemporary design. Strategically located between the newly constructed speedway connecting Sharjah city to Khorfakkan and the majestic Hajjar Mountains, this vibrant marketplace serves as a dynamic hub where rural charm meets urban convenience. Designed by Shape Architecture Practice + Research, the market not only caters to the local community but also elevates the region's cultural and social identity.

Masterplan and Layout: Community-Centered Design
The Shees Friday Market masterplan is executed in two phases, with the southern phase already completed and the northern phase underway. This thoughtfully curated layout offers an array of experiences:
- Traditional Friday market shops with fresh produce, artisanal honey, handmade carpets, aromatic herbs, and local nurseries.
- Food kiosks and a lively food court offering local delicacies.
- Children’s play area designed to engage young visitors safely.
- Open-air theatre for cultural events and performances.
- Mosque and serene spaces for reflection and community gathering.
The market’s design emphasizes interaction, fluidity, and inclusivity, creating a space where visitors can wander freely and connect with both vendors and each other.

Architectural Features: Tradition Meets Modernity
The southern market is organized into three distinct blocks, each defined by stone-clad walls and flat horizontal stepped roofs, merging local architectural heritage with modern functionality. The shops incorporate:
- Generous natural lighting and cross-ventilation for comfort.
- Double-glazed walls framing views of the surrounding landscape.
- Sliding glass doors allowing flexibility in seasonal usage.
A 3-meter-deep channel runs between the market and the mountains, directing rainwater safely to a dam while preventing erosion from loose stones, exemplifying the project’s integration of sustainable water management.

Open-Plan Market Experience: A Souk-Inspired Design
One of the market’s most captivating aspects is its open layout, blurring the line between interior and exterior spaces. The absence of barriers encourages visitors to interact naturally, fostering a sense of community reminiscent of traditional Arabian souks. This design philosophy ensures a seamless visitor experience while maintaining cultural authenticity.

Sustainability and Local Integration
Sustainability is central to the Shees Friday Market’s ethos. Key measures include:
- Locally sourced materials, including stones from nearby tunneling projects.
- Shaded walkways created by generous roof overhangs to minimize energy consumption.
- Shops allocated to heads of families from Shees and Al Nahwa, strengthening the market’s local engagement and social impact.
The project reflects a commitment to eco-conscious design while honoring cultural heritage and social responsibility.

Looking Ahead: Expansion and Future Impact
As the northern phase of the Shees Friday Market develops, the project continues to expand its role as a cultural and social landmark. By blending traditional market experiences, innovative architecture, and sustainable practices, the market exemplifies how thoughtful design can uplift communities, foster cultural pride, and enhance local economies.
The Shees Friday Market stands as a testament to architecture’s transformative power—creating spaces that are not only functional and beautiful but also deeply rooted in community, culture, and sustainability.
