Shop to Flat by Jose-studio: Transforming a Commercial Space into a Cozy Urban Retreat
Jose-studio transformed a Lisbon commercial space into a cozy, functional flat, blending modern design with urban neighborhood charm.

In the vibrant heart of Lisbon’s Campo de Ourique neighborhood, a neglected commercial space has been beautifully reimagined into a compact, functional flat, complete with a charming backyard. This transformation, led by Jose-studio, highlights the studio’s innovative approach to urban renovation and interior design.
A Thoughtful Refurbishment: Blending Public and Private Spaces
The space, once abandoned, now showcases how thoughtful architecture can turn an old commercial structure into a warm, welcoming home. A striking red metal grid was added to the storefront, forming a unique threshold that not only protects but also offers a permeable connection to the lively streetscape. This grid serves as a mediator between the outside world and the private sanctuary within.

Natural Light and Privacy Through Glass Blocks
Behind the metal grid, a wall of glass blocks introduces an influx of natural light, creating a soft transition from the bustling city outside to the peaceful interior. The glass block design preserves privacy, allowing the home’s occupants to enjoy daylight without compromising seclusion.

Seamless Integration with the City
One of the defining features of this space is its connection to the neighborhood. The flat’s entryway, where the client is often seen relaxing with a book or sipping coffee, acts as a serene threshold between the hustle of the city and the quietude of home. This seamless interaction highlights the blend of the urban environment and private living, giving the apartment an open, airy feel.

Interior Design Highlights: A Warm and Functional Home
Inside, the 50 m² flat is thoughtfully laid out to maximize both function and style. The design incorporates natural materials, with wooden accents and simple, clean lines that create a minimalist yet cozy atmosphere. Lighting plays a key role in enhancing the warmth of the space, with subtle fixtures designed to illuminate while maintaining a relaxed ambiance.

The open living and dining areas are carefully curated to balance form and function, creating an inviting space for relaxation and socializing. The use of neutral tones and warm textures throughout the apartment contributes to an atmosphere of calm and simplicity, ideal for modern urban living.

A Home in Harmony with its Surroundings
By preserving key elements of the original commercial building and introducing modern, sustainable design principles, Jose-studio has crafted an apartment that feels both timeless and contemporary. The transformation of this commercial space into a stylish flat is an inspiring example of adaptive reuse in architecture, demonstrating how old buildings can be reimagined to meet the needs of today’s urban dwellers.
