Located in the northern heights of Oaxaca City, Mexico, Soul House (Casa del Alma) by Espacio 18 Arquitectura is designed as a sanctuary of peace and contemplation. Set beside an ecological reserve in San Felipe del Agua, this residence blends modern architecture with the natural landscape, offering breathtaking views of the Central Valleys and surrounding mountains.

The project was conceived as the ultimate retreat for a client who had spent a lifetime working and traveling. Inspired by a dream of finding shelter under a symbolic red tree in the desert, the design represents a personal refuge where body and soul find rest.

Architectural Design and Concept

The 460 m² house sits on a steep, irregularly shaped plot, which presented both challenges and opportunities. To accommodate the client’s request for a single-level home with accessibility for an elderly resident, the architects designed two concrete volumes. These parallelepiped forms rise like natural rock formations, integrating seamlessly into the mountainous terrain.

The two main volumes create a central axis that separates and connects public and private functions. This spatial organization allows social gatherings, services, and intimate living areas to coexist harmoniously within the residence.

Light, Shadow, and Atmosphere

A key design strategy was the use of light as an architectural material. Vertical openings, skylights, beams, and strategically placed windows allow daylight to wash over interior walls, revealing textures and marking the passage of time. The interplay of light and shadow transforms spaces into serene environments for reflection and daily living.

Climate-Responsive and Sustainable Design

Given the warm climate of Oaxaca, the architects introduced cross-ventilation systems through horizontal and vertical perforations, ensuring natural airflow and thermal comfort. The restrained architectural language keeps the surrounding landscape as the central focus, framing panoramic views of nature and cityscapes.

The home’s spatial program unfolds across three levels:

  • Basement: mechanical rooms and parking.
  • First Floor: social spaces, services, and bedrooms organized for functionality and openness.
  • Second Floor: a private volume that supports an expansive terrace, designed to capture Oaxaca’s most dramatic sunsets.

A House for Reflection and Connection

Beyond its functional program, Soul House is a dwelling of meaning. It is a place for peace, contemplation, and introspection, yet equally designed for connection and shared moments with family and friends. By merging modern minimalism with contextual sensitivity, Espacio 18 Arquitectura has created a timeless residence rooted in both memory and place.
