A Sensitive Victorian Terrace Transformation in Clifton Hill, Melbourne
A Seamless Blend of Heritage and Contemporary Design
Located in the leafy suburb of Clifton Hill, Melbourne, South Terrace House is a sophisticated renovation and extension of a grand Victorian terrace. Designed by Sanders & King in collaboration with Chan Architecture, the project responds to the challenges of a long, narrow site with a sensitive design that preserves historic character while introducing light-filled, modern spaces.

Site-Specific Extension with Level Transitions
The architecture takes advantage of the site’s natural slope by integrating gentle internal and external level changes into the new rear extension. This approach allows for a fluid progression of spaces—from the restored front rooms to the expansive open-plan areas at the rear—creating a subtle interplay between old and new.
At the ground level, a succession of bright living areas connects seamlessly to the outdoors, while the previously unused subfloor has been reimagined as a spacious rumpus room and feature wine cellar, making full use of the site's vertical potential.

Interior Zoning with a Central Fireplace
At the heart of the rear addition lies a sunken living room, defined by a double-sided wood-burning fireplace. Clad in textured white stacked brickwork, the hearth provides both a physical and visual anchor for the surrounding kitchen and dining spaces. This central design element helps establish cozy intimacy while maintaining openness within the shared living zones.

Restoration of the Original Victorian Spaces
The existing rooms at the front of the house have been largely retained in their original layout, but refreshed with new finishes and lighting fixtures to align with contemporary lifestyles. Careful detailing and material selection ensure the Victorian heritage is respected, while allowing modern comforts to shine through.

Refined Interior Palette and Material Expression
The interiors embrace a natural, calming material palette that complements the home’s orientation and design intent. South-facing spaces are kept bright and welcoming with:
- Pale oak timber flooring
- Warm grey stone tiles
- Natural walnut veneer joinery
- Black steel-framed windows and doors
This palette balances lightness with contrast, creating an atmosphere that is both elegant and grounded.

Craftsmanship and Collaboration
Executed by Kleev Homes and beautifully documented by photographer Tatjana Plitt, the South Terrace House stands as a model of collaborative craftsmanship, where architectural vision, attention to detail, and builder execution come together seamlessly.
