TEC Energy's new office, designed by MRDK, is a striking example of modern office design in Montreal. Situated within the iconic Place Ville Marie tower, originally envisioned by architect I.M. Pei, the office seamlessly bridges the gap between mid-century elegance and contemporary minimalism. The design transforms traditional workspace concepts, blending a refined aesthetic with functional innovation to create an environment that fosters collaboration, productivity, and timeless sophistication.

A Grand Entrance Inspired by Brutalist Architecture

Upon arrival, visitors are welcomed through a vestibule enclosed by a geometric screen wall. This architectural feature, inspired by the brutalist aesthetic of a nearby power station, serves as both a visual statement and a connection to Montreal's rich architectural history. The structured entryway sets the tone for the rest of the office, where materiality and formality interact in a carefully orchestrated balance.

The Kitchen: A Social and Collaborative Hub

Positioned to maximize natural light and offer breathtaking views of downtown Montreal, the kitchen and dining area function as the heart of the office. This space is more than a break area; it is a dynamic setting for collaboration, informal meetings, and social engagement. The juxtaposition of refined materials with an open layout encourages interaction while maintaining a sense of warmth and approachability.

An Open-Plan Layout Encouraging Interaction

The workspace is designed with a focus on fostering communication and adaptability. Various breakout areas, including a cozy lounge with residential-style comforts and a greenery-filled nook, offer employees opportunities for relaxation and spontaneous discussions. To balance the need for openness with the necessity of focus, a private phone booth provides a quiet refuge for uninterrupted work. The carefully curated spatial arrangement ensures that the office remains a flexible and inspiring environment.

Acoustic Design Enhancing Productivity

A significant challenge in modern office design is managing acoustics without compromising aesthetic appeal. The TEC Energy office incorporates suspended felt baffles that mimic the rhythm of neighboring office towers, reducing ambient noise while maintaining visual continuity with the surrounding environment. Tectum acoustic panels, used as wainscoting throughout the open office, add another layer of sound absorption while integrating seamlessly into the overall design language.

Private Offices Reflecting Iconic Architectural Elements

Two private offices, located in the glazed corner of the suite, draw inspiration from the Place Ville Marie Tower's distinctive form and materials. The use of travertine and aluminum pays homage to the building's mid-century modern identity while reinforcing a timeless sense of elegance. These executive spaces maintain a refined atmosphere, where privacy and openness are carefully balanced through material selection and spatial composition.

Art as an Integral Part of the Design

Incorporating artistic expression into the workspace, the office features three custom artworks by Caravan Studio. Abstractly spelling out "T.E.C.," these pieces contribute to the office’s identity, serving as both a branding element and an artistic focal point. The integration of art within the architectural framework reinforces the concept of a workspace that is not only functional but also deeply rooted in creative expression.
