Merging Functionality with Tranquility
The Tergooi Medical Center represents a significant milestone in healthcare architecture in the Netherlands, unifying two former hospital sites—Blaricum and Hilversum—into a single, cohesive and sustainable facility. Designed by Wiegerinck Architects, the new medical center emphasizes serenity, daylight, and a deep connection with nature. Nestled within the lush, forested landscape of Hilversum, the center offers a healing environment that prioritizes well-being, accessibility, and clarity in spatial organization.

A Hospital Designed Around the Patient
Rather than a monolithic medical complex, the building is divided into four volumes discreetly embedded within the surrounding woods. These sections are seamlessly interconnected through transparent, greenhouse-like corridors that flood the interiors with daylight and offer panoramic views of the trees—enhancing patient comfort and spatial orientation. Wide, bright walkways act as arteries, making navigation effortless and intuitive for visitors, patients, and staff alike.
The central spine of the hospital provides a clear path throughout the complex, passing through open courtyards and glazed passages that evoke a sense of walking outdoors. Every department is easy to locate, reducing stress and offering patients a calm and comprehensible experience.


Prioritizing Privacy and Views
Each patient room is private, with generous windows offering uninterrupted views of treetops and the sky. Low windowsills ensure even bedridden patients can maintain visual contact with the natural surroundings—an important element for healing and psychological well-being. In addition to patient-focused design, the hospital separates public and clinical routes efficiently, allowing staff to transport patients discreetly on the second floor without intersecting with visitors.


Centralized Care Delivery
The building's functional core—known as the "hot floor"—includes radiology and the operating room (OR) department, placed centrally for maximum efficiency and short internal routes. This core connects to surrounding care units, enabling seamless care delivery and workflow optimization. The second-floor connection ensures continuous internal circulation while minimizing interference with patient areas on the ground floor.


Inspired by the Forest: Sustainable and Harmonious Design
The facade design is directly inspired by the forest. Vertical rhythms, textural brick reminiscent of tree bark, and aluminum cladding that shimmers like leaves integrate the building into its natural context. Green Sedum roofs help regulate heat and manage rainwater while solar panels contribute significantly to the building’s energy requirements, affirming the center’s commitment to sustainability.
Natural materials, soft tones, and warm textures define the interior palette, fostering a sense of peace and comfort throughout the facility. Every architectural element, from the lighting to the layout, serves the dual goals of functionality and healing.
The Tergooi Medical Center is a model for contemporary healthcare design—sensitive, sustainable, and centered on human experience. It seamlessly blends medical efficiency with emotional and sensory wellness, providing patients, families, and healthcare professionals with a calm, efficient, and future-ready environment.
