Nestled within a quiet gated community in Vadodara, Gujarat, The Core Court House by TRAANSPACE redefines modern Indian residential architecture through introspection and light. As its name suggests, the home revolves around a central courtyard, the “core” of the design, where light, air, and greenery animate every level. What emerges is not just a house, but a living organism that breathes and evolves with its inhabitants.

Context and Concept

The site—a modest 2,900 sq. ft. plot in a dense residential neighborhood—offered limited opportunities for natural views or spatial drama. Rather than seeking external inspiration, the architects turned inward, sculpting an introverted courtyard home that generates its own visual and spatial richness.

The courtyard, carved into the center of the plan, becomes a vertical well of light. Around it, spaces unfold with fluidity: living, dining, kitchen, and a bedroom on the ground level; three bedrooms and passageways above; and finally, a home theatre, art studio, and terrace on the top floor.

This internal focus not only enhances privacy but also ensures a play of light and shadow that transforms the ambience throughout the day.

Architectural Planning and Form

The planning of the Core Court House is deceptively simple yet deeply thoughtful. Circulation revolves around the central void, where a sculptural staircase gracefully wraps around the courtyard. The skylight above floods the space with natural illumination, filtered through greenery that thrives within the core.

From the outside, the home presents itself as a floating brick box, a minimal and monolithic structure softened by green balconies and planters. The architects adopted a horizontal stack bond brick pattern to emphasize texture and visual rhythm, adding to the house’s tactile simplicity.

On the south and west façades, carved-out balconies act as green buffers, filtering sunlight while creating quiet outdoor moments. Oblique concrete bands intersect the brick surface, adding dynamism and subtle intrigue to the otherwise calm geometry.

Material Palette and Interior Expression

Inside, The Core Court House embraces restraint. The interiors are defined by a triad of grey flooring, white walls, and warm wooden furniture. This restrained palette creates harmony with the rawness of the brick exterior, blurring the boundary between minimalism and domestic warmth.

The furniture, mostly built-in or custom-crafted, aligns seamlessly with the architecture’s purity. There is no excess ornamentation; instead, every detail draws the eye back to the courtyard—the symbolic heart of the home.

One of the most poetic elements is the staircase wall, composed entirely of exposed brick. As sunlight filters through the skylight, it casts an ever-changing play of shadows across the surface. This rhythmic sciography—the art of shadow—brings a tranquil dynamism to the interiors, embodying TRAANSPACE’s belief that architecture should move with time.

The house unfolds as a journey from darkness to light, enclosure to openness. The courtyard mediates between the intimate and the expansive, binding all levels together visually and experientially.
