The TNV Coffee and Complex Building by Comma Studio is a striking example of mixed-use architecture, combining a modern coffee shop with rental apartments, located in the bustling western area of West Lake, Hanoi. Completed in 2023, this 850 m² building features a dynamic design that responds to the challenges posed by the site's unique, diamond-shaped land. The design not only optimizes the space but also contributes to the architectural identity of the area.

The Concept Behind the Design: A Diamond-Shaped Land

The most unique aspect of the TNV Coffee and Complex Building lies in its response to the land's irregular shape. Situated at a corner, the plot has sharp diagonal edges that necessitated an innovative approach to the building's form. The beveled perimeter of the land directly inspired the building's facade design, with the architects using contours on the building’s exterior to reflect this diamond-shaped land. These contours are achieved through stacked floor slabs, which not only emphasize the building's horizontal lines but also create a strong and stable presence in the surrounding area.

Design Features: Horizontal and Vertical Harmonies

The building’s design seamlessly integrates its complex layout with functional spaces. The three podium floors, which house the coffee shop, extend outwards to form balconies. These open spaces provide sweeping views and are framed with green screens, making them an ideal spot for visitors to relax while enjoying their beverages.

On the upper floors, the floor slabs continue to play a crucial role in the design. These slabs act as horizontal paths, connecting and unifying the building's facade elements, including glass walls, loggias, and brick walls that shelter the apartment spaces. This integration of floor slabs into both the exterior and interior elements of the building gives the structure a cohesive look, from the ground level to the upper apartment floors.

Interior Spaces: Minimalistic and Spacious Design

Inside the TNV Coffee and Complex Building, the concrete floor slabs define the architectural character. The main interior spaces are positioned beneath large, flat, and rough concrete ceilings with recessed beams, which contribute to a spacious and rustic aesthetic. This clever use of concrete not only enhances the visual appeal of the interiors but also optimizes space, which is especially important in a building with a limited height.

The open, industrial feel is balanced with the warmth of the wooden accents scattered across the building’s facade. These wooden units have an acute angular form and are strategically placed to provide both aesthetic and functional benefits. On the lower floors, these wooden units enclose inclined columns that support the balconies, while on the upper floors, they serve as decorative niches that allow natural light to flood the interior.

The design of the TNV Coffee and Complex Building was driven by the need to optimize a diagonal land shape with sharp corners while still achieving an interesting and functional design. The final result is a building that blends bold, modern architectural elements with functional spaces, making it a standout feature in Hanoi’s architectural landscape.

The wooden box system, which is part of the building’s facade, resonates with the outline of the floor slabs, creating a unique and visually appealing feature. This dynamic design approach ensures the building not only meets the practical needs of its users but also serves as an architectural landmark in the local community.
