The TNY55 House, designed by Marc Flick Architekt BDA, is a sustainable, efficient, and budget-conscious residence tailored for a family of four. Located in Heidenfahrt, Germany, this 108 m² home was built to the KfW55 energy efficiency standard, emphasizing minimal energy consumption, high indoor comfort, and eco-friendly materials.

Compact Design with Maximum Spatial Quality

The guiding principle of the TNY55 House is functionality in minimal spaces. Every square meter was carefully planned according to the family’s lifestyle and spatial needs. The simple yet intelligent floor plan aligns the house towards the southwest, optimizing sunlight exposure and creating a seamless connection between the indoor living areas and the garden.

On the ground floor, residents enter through a buffer zone that includes a guest toilet, storage, and access to the garage. The open-plan living area, defined by a thoughtfully designed kitchen, benefits from floor-to-ceiling glazing. This merges interior and exterior spaces, enhancing the perception of openness and light. At the heart of the home, a staircase constructed from leftover timber links the ground floor to the upper level, which features three bedrooms and a main bathroom, maintaining a compact and clearly structured layout.

Sustainable Materials and Energy Efficiency

Sustainability is central to TNY55 House’s architecture. The design incorporates solid wood walls, chosen for their excellent energy performance, natural thermal regulation, and positive indoor climate. Ecological softwood fiber insulation further enhances energy efficiency, binding over 53 tons of CO₂.

The filigree design of the 10 cm thick solid wood walls, without inner paneling, allows a 7% reduction in overall construction size, minimizing the use of climate-damaging composite materials. Except for the exterior plaster, the house is fully dismantlable, enabling all components to return to the raw material cycle. The interior roof is lined with clay panels, which regulate humidity and maintain a comfortable living environment throughout the year.
