Transforming Aleppo: Urban Design for Cultural Revival
Reviving heritage through innovative design, Aleppo’s urban regeneration inspires unity and preserves culture for generations to come.
The war in Aleppo has created a temporal void, dividing time into what was "before" and "after" the conflict. To bridge this gap and restore continuity, the design concept focuses on creating an Urban Regeneration Space—a transcultural spatial-temporal hub fostering connection and change.
The concept of Urban Regeneration draws inspiration from the Japanese Shinto Zen Buddhist philosophy of "Ma," which refers to the space or void between entities. This philosophy emphasizes the connections and interrelations that emerge from these gaps. By incorporating this perspective, the design aims to redefine the site as an urban void, a transformative space where time, people, and culture converge.

Phoenix Garden: A Public Oasis
At the heart of this vision is the Phoenix Garden, a public space designed to bring together diverse social groups. This garden acts as a platform for convergence, fostering peace and coexistence. Located in the heart of Aleppo, it serves as a symbol of resilience and cultural unity, offering shade and vitality through its lush date palm grove.

Architectural Features: Bridging Time and Space
- Urban Void: The central feature of the design, the urban void, serves as a transitional space. Visitors experience a seamless flow of time, connecting the past, present, and future.
- Mirror Wall: Reflecting both the ever-changing city and the permanence of memory, this wall symbolizes transformation and unity.
- Cultural Center: This vibrant hub includes art galleries, cinemas, a children’s activity zone, and more, enriching the cultural fabric of Aleppo.
- Memorial Space: A meditative courtyard preserving the memory of war, fostering reflection and hope.
- Palm Grove: A natural retreat that brings economic and environmental benefits to the city.

A Cultural Space for All
The project "Co-Existence" envisions the reconstruction of Aleppo as a global heritage site, uniting the Citadel, Souk, and historical monuments into a cohesive cultural gathering zone. This transformation aims to attract both locals and tourists, highlighting Aleppo’s rich history and potential for renewal.

Global Impact: Rebuilding Identity
Aleppo’s revival as a cultural and social hub underscores the resilience of its people. By reshaping the urban landscape into a dynamic, inclusive, and sustainable space, the project not only honors the city’s heritage but also redefines its future. The Urban Regeneration Space bridges divides, creating a harmonious environment where the past and present coexist to shape a vibrant tomorrow.
