URBREW Craft Beer Mashing Workshop by Name Lab – A Fusion of Industrial Precision and Brewing Culture
URBREW Craft Beer Mashing Workshop blends industrial precision, weathering steel, and glass volumes, creating a dynamic, immersive brewery experience in Handan, China.
Curated by Han Shuangyu, the URBREW Craft Beer Mashing Workshop, designed by Name Lab, is a standout architectural addition to the Urbew Industrial Campus in Handan Economic-Technological Development Area, Hebei Province, China. Completed in 2021 with a total area of 552 m², this innovative facility transforms the traditional brewing workshop into a vibrant, experiential hub for both production and visitors.

Architectural Concept
The design philosophy behind URBREW reflects a unique blend of industrial precision, craft authenticity, and the free-spirited essence of craft beer culture. Recognizing that modern workspaces need individuality and character, the architects aimed to create a space that embodies rough, raw energy, yet remains functional and inviting for employees and visitors alike. The result is a building that communicates the bold personality of the URBREW brand while providing a highly efficient operational environment.

Form and Structure
The workshop is composed of two distinct vertical volumes, visually connected yet functionally separate:
- The upper volume is a silvery block with pitched roofs, housing the operational platform for brewing and a visitor exhibition area, where enthusiasts can explore the brewing process.
- The lower volume is a transparent glass cube accommodating the core operational area.
Between the two, a flat layer of weathering steel serves as both structural connector and visual divider. This three-layer composition transitions from silvery metal to rusty red steel, then to transparent glass, reflecting the workshop’s internal functions while creating a striking architectural statement.

Materiality and Sustainability
Given the workshop’s high-temperature and high-humidity environment, weathering steel was chosen as the primary material for its durability and resistance to climate conditions. Over time, its evolving texture enhances the building’s aesthetic, making the material both practical and visually compelling. The surrounding landscape features gravel surfaces, which serve as flexible outdoor areas and potential camping or social zones, integrating nature with industrial design.

Visitor Experience
URBREW is not just a functional brewing facility; it is a destination. Its upper exhibition platform allows visitors to engage with the brewing process firsthand, fostering a dynamic relationship between production and audience. The building’s layered material palette, combined with natural light and transparency, creates a sense of openness and movement, reflecting the energetic, unrestrained spirit of craft beer culture.

Architectural Impact
URBREW Craft Beer Mashing Workshop is a benchmark for modern industrial architecture in China, combining craft production, educational experiences, and industrial design. It demonstrates how even a functional facility can become a cultural landmark, marrying efficiency, aesthetics, and brand storytelling.
