Verbena Installation by HANGHAR and Estudio DIIR: A Mediterranean Celebration of Community, Memory, and Interaction
Verbena is a festive, Mediterranean-inspired installation fostering community, interaction, and cultural memory through ephemeral architecture and shared spatial rituals.
A Red Tent as Spatial Symbolism
At the core of the installation is a striking large red tent—an architectural gesture that immediately evokes the spirit of Mediterranean festivals. Traditionally used in local verbenas (open-air festivals), the red tent becomes a symbol of ephemeral gathering, drawing a direct line between folkloric heritage and contemporary public art. Its vibrant form extends beyond the physical limits of the site, piquing curiosity and inviting exploration.
As visitors step inside, they encounter a space designed not for passive observation but for active participation. This is not an installation to walk through—it is one to inhabit, engage with, and remember.

Architecture of Interaction and Collectivity
The spatial configuration within Verbena is intentionally informal, inspired by traditional architectural elements found in communal Mediterranean life: the bench, the bar, the porch, the table. Each of these elements serves as a social device, encouraging people to sit, talk, eat, linger—and most importantly, connect.
The architects reclaim these typologies from vernacular public life, reframing them as tools for social healing in a post-isolation world. Following years of social distancing and fragmentation, Verbena functions as a counterpoint to disconnection, championing spaces of warmth, gathering, and celebration.

Reimagining Festivity as a Future Model
While the tent recalls the past, the project looks toward the future. Verbena is not a nostalgic replica but a critical reinterpretation of Mediterranean festivity, responding to today’s socio-political uncertainties with optimism and openness. The installation doesn’t simply offer a space for fun—it becomes a manifesto for collaborative futures, rooted in empathy, mutual support, and the joy of shared presence.
In doing so, it repositions architecture not as shelter, but as invitation—to gather, to reflect, and to build emotional and cultural resilience together.

A Poetic Response to Contemporary Uncertainty
In an era marked by global instability, Verbena offers a poetic and architectural response to crisis. It reframes conflict, isolation, and confusion as an opportunity to forge new alliances, grounded in the calm and inclusive ethos of Mediterranean culture. The installation invites users to slow down, to celebrate the moment, and to rediscover the richness of collective rituals that define belonging.
Its temporality becomes its power: Verbena reminds us that even the most fleeting experiences can leave lasting impressions—and that architecture, at its most human, can help us navigate the present while envisioning a more connected and joyful future.

With Verbena, HANGHAR and Estudio DIIR craft more than an installation—they construct a living environment of celebration, connection, and cultural memory. Through a clever mix of ephemeral structure, symbolic materials, and spatial storytelling, the project serves as a testament to the enduring need for shared spaces where people can gather not just to exist, but to thrive together.
