Windsor Castle by Antarctica – Innovative Family Home in Seddon, Australia
Windsor Castle by Antarctica Architects transforms a small Seddon site into a light-filled, spacious family home with garden integration.
Designed by Antarctica Architects in 2017, the Windsor Castle house in Seddon, Australia, transforms a constrained suburban site into a spacious, light-filled family residence. Photographed by Field Carr, the project reimagines a previously single-fronted weatherboard cottage that had undergone multiple alterations over a decade. With limited orientation, tight boundaries, and four neighboring properties, the original house offered minimal opportunities for expansion.

Design Concept
The core idea behind Windsor Castle was maximizing space on a small site. By introducing both vertical and horizontal volumes, the architects created a home that feels expansive inside and out, with a strong connection to its garden and natural surroundings.

Architecture & Structure
The house features a steel portal frame aligned with the planning envelope, combining exposed concrete slabs with ground-level glazing and polycarbonate panels. The living areas extend seamlessly into the garden, creating a greenhouse-like environment filled with plants, flexible furniture, and abundant natural light. Views of the tree canopy and open sky along the north and west facades enhance the sense of openness, further amplified by a double-height central void.

Spatial Layout
- Ground Level: Two masonry blocks stretch toward the south and east boundaries, accommodating the kitchen, laundry, and study.
- Upper Level: A metal-clad volume floats above, housing family bedrooms and bathrooms within a stretched roof space punctuated by dormer windows. A striking circular front window captures street views like a large camera lens, acting as a sculptural focal point.

Community & Streetscape Integration
fSet back from the street amidst dense foliage, the home enhances the streetscape while fostering stronger connections with the neighborhood. By opening up the facade and embracing its environment, Windsor Castle balances privacy with community engagement.
