In what ways can biodiversity be integrated as a part of future city planning?
The paper explores the possibility of integrating biodiversity as an integral part of master plans for cities. Over the years, city planning mainly revolved around designing spaces while taking into consideration the living conditions and movement patterns of the human population. With increase in population growth leading to the construction of more cities, this has led to a sudden depletion of our biodiversity disrupting the balance of nature. This leads to the question of how can biodiversity be integrated along with our cities? The main threat to our biodiversity is the progressive degradation of ecosystems due to urbanization and lack of proper management to conserve and preserve biodiversity. In order to understand on how to overcome this, a detailed study should be done to understand the relationship between cities and biodiversity and how one can support the other. One must understand that biodiversity preservation and conservation does not mean the reduction and stop of development but rather a systematic approach and planned management to our future expansions where importance is given not just to the increasing demand of human needs but equally to the natural habitat and ecosystems that compose of our surrounding as well. The paper further explores to study the various spatial requirements of flora and fauna and how these can be translated into a master plan for our future expanding cities in terms of patches and connecting green corridors. It further explores the influence that biodiversity has on cities and vice versa and establishes a link between the two. To ensure we protect and nourish this biodiversity it is imperative that we gather and disseminate essential knowledge that can empower people, industries and governments and help them live in harmony with nature. For a global change to slowly transition, actions and measures must be taken not just by government bodies but by the locals as well. These are understood from the local case studies. It is imperative to spread awareness of the impact of depletion of biodiversity can have on our future generation so that measures can be taken on an individual level as well to allow for a larger change.
