Contemporary Pavilion
Temporary and semi-permanent pavilions built with contemporary materials, forms, and programs, often sited in historic or cultural settings.
A pavilion is a small, open or partly enclosed structure, historically used for exhibitions, gatherings, and shelter. Contemporary pavilions reinterpret this type through new materials, digital fabrication, and programs that range from sensory installations to community forums and teaching spaces. They are frequently temporary, which allows designers to test ideas at a human scale with lighter constraints than permanent buildings.
Members on uni.xyz share work that places pavilions in dialogue with heritage sites, such as a mirror pavilion referencing fortified history in Armenia and a sensory installation inside a modernist hospital in Barcelona. Other entries explore natural materials like bamboo, lightweight structures, and the tension between monumental and domestic scales.
