Vertical Cemetery, Future of the Past

Global population keeps expanding and what happens to the dead? In 2014 report the world birth to death ratio is 3:1 which increases to 2:1 in the year 2016. It is estimated that in 2045 the land needed for burials around the world would come to an end. There is no archetypal form for a cemetery, so this design would create one such structure.

A shatter residing the tomb of Shahjahan. The concept of Black Taj is interpreted as a memory of pain and agony which creates a cracked void. This void is a window to Mumtaz's life, and watches over her for eternity.

Life and death are closely connected. The life path is an endless process from birth to the moment of physical death. Our project calls to think about how transient our earthly path is and how great this path is in afterlife.

In our design, the ashes will be used to nourish the potted plant that symbolizes the dead, so that each dead person will realize its second life. We hope that the deceased will make his own decision based on his own culture, beliefs and preferences. We have adopted a module with a variable structure and stacked these modules vertically.

The project is to replace the traditional generic cemetery space with highly differentiated urban context, releasing the identical heavy stone-made tombs on the ground to various sensitive crystal-like prism in the sky, the tension between life and death, mortal and immortal, past and future has been reintegrated in increasing densified urban realms.

As the urban contexte generates a difficulty to cut oneself off from the activity, the design is based on an introverted form. The exterior appearance reflect urbanity as the interior is a sort of protected parc. Two atmosphers, two landspaces. The moment of death is treated as a « passage ». All the design tends to reveal and to mark each temporality.
