About Discussions Projects13 Journals3 Publications1

Vernacular materials represent the building resources and techniques developed within specific regions and cultures over time. Designers and architects engage with these materials to create work that connects contemporary practice to local traditions and environmental contexts.

The community examines how vernacular materials—from mud and raw earth to regional textiles and natural resources—inform design decisions. Projects range from documenting traditional construction methods in India and Kerala to developing neo-vernacular approaches that preserve cultural building practices while integrating modern technologies.

Interlude is a cultural centre that aims to collect, maintain and promote local traditions and in turn making a sustainable architecture that has almost no environmental impact, thus generating a unique cultural icon in Morocco and North Africa. Just like an interlude in music, this project aims to become a place to have a break from the routine.

An Urban Forest

Cities need to re-born and be alive, to make the world better again. Forest in town means that other forests can grow in town and each can make the place all living creatures can find a relationship. From Tewahedo tradition of the chapel in the forest we found the inspiration and a proof that this relationship is still possible and we should never forget.

PATCHWORK

While walking on the street, the masses reaching towards horizon consist of massive silhouette and color. It starts to show its surfaces as it gets closer. As we get closer and closer, it takes us in, begins to show its color and details. We touch, feel, and it is now fragmented. Patchwork discusses the distance between us and material, its perceptibility.

Mud, Memory and the Man-made: Preserving Sindh's Vernacular Through Neo-Vernacular Technologies

Rooted in the landscapes of Sindh, this project reimagines vernacular architecture as a living infrastructure. Through field research, material experimentation, and modular design, it develops a climate-responsive housing system that strengthens resilience while preserving the knowledge embedded within traditional building practices.
