5WinnerKoh Phangan AirportKo Pha-ngan is an island in the Gulf of Thailand in southeast Thailand in Surat Thani Province. The development of this project is due to the need to create an airport that can provide a tourist capacity of 600,000 people per year and will challenge traditional airports.
5Editor's ChoiceThe MoonMoon is the inspiring intention through the whole design. We respects the complicated nature conditions and embraces the surrounding lush nature. The two airports (on land and water) will remodel and upgrade the tourism experience dramatically. The design also brings the capability to reconstruct the social-cultural impact as well as economic upgrading.
6Editor's ChoiceFULL MOON AIRPORTKoh Phangan Airport, Thailand: The main concept behind the airport is to capture the beauty of the island of Koh Phangan. To show this beauty in the best possible light, we positioned the airport in the form of a full circle between land and sea. As such, it encloses the water, forests and beaches.
3Editor's ChoiceAIRPORT RE-IMAGINED - KOH PHANGAN THE DESIGN DRAWS ON THE EXCITEMENT OF TRADITIONAL THAILAND AND KOH PHANGAN ARCHITECTURE WITH A MODERN TWIST TO PLAY A BALANCING GAME BETWEEN PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE. THE AIRPORT WOULD BE THE FIRST AIRPORT IN THE WORLD WITH BUILT IN FLEXIBILITY TO GROW AND SHRINK AS CAPACITY IS NEEDED TO ACCOUNT FOR BUSY TIMES.
7Keeper of the islandThe concept is based on the image of a traditional character of a legend - a snake named Nag. The snake's tail is an airfield (including the terminal) raised above the ground. This minimizes the intrusion into the national park. The snake's head the main visual accent, the control tower that greets the guests on approach and becomes a symbol of the island.
2SUNKEN ISLANDThe tropical environment slowly disappears under the horizon and the visitors enter an overwhelming artificial space: THE SUNKEN ISLAND
3Moon of Koh-Phangan we intend the airport of the future through environmental protection and development. Cozy and familiar: technology will not be visible but present, a pleasant place optimizing the physical and psychological well-being. Eco-friendly: respectful of the environment, built with recyclable materials (wood, steel and glass) and energy self-sufficient.
7TidalMuch like tidal pools are small glimpses of activity that resides in an ocean, this airport aims to give visitors small glimpses of what the island has to offer with spaces and activities sprawled out along the airport journey. The spaces and activities get larger as visitors enter the island and get smaller as one is departing to reminisce.
3The 360 The 360 is a threshold from air to water. A pod like terminal space that rests entirely upon a 3D-printed floating bone structure. The structure is stabilized through its connection to land where the planes land. Upon arrival the travelers are taken to their destination by boats, traditional to the land. Bamboo screen opens to the mountains and the ocean.
