Using grain bins to find a new purpose

Does anyone know how we should design space by using 12 bins with an area of almost 386 sq.m when maximum builtup area is 329 sq.m. And what about the ground coverage of 20%?

Hello, The limits to built up area and ground coverage have been removed. The participants are free to propose design in the site area within the height restriction given in the brief. We appreciate you bringing this contradiction to our attention. Good Luck!

Hi, can we add other buildings than these 12 grain bins? Made of other materials or of a different shape?

Hello Michael, Thanks for the query. The brief statement aims at repurposing steel grains bins. Any other buildings or changes made of other materials/shapes won't be considered in the design assessment or can enable disqualification from the competition.

Thanks Uni and I have one more question. Sorry to ask about that but are you sure this is the right size of a site? This 12 bins are much more bigger than site area with all the setbacks. Can we and should we cut them in small pieces?

Hello, We have reviewed the resources and identified the issue. The setbacks have been removed for the brief site and participants are free to set buildable area limits on their own. A minimum of 6 grain bins must be used in the competition. The number of grain bins proposed must not exceed 12. The participants are free to modify the bin by cutting or any other process, whichever works for their design proposal. Hope this helps. Good Luck!

Hi, I am a participant in re-utility, I would like to ask if you can provide a 3D model of the barn. Your data about the barn is not clear.

Hello, A 3D model has been uploaded in the additional resources of the competition 'Re-Utility'. Good Luck!

Hello, can something such as a wall be added to the site? Can an addition that changes the footprint of the grain bin be added?

0

Hello, The grain bins must accomodate the major lodging activity proposed in the brief and since their repurpose is the main aim of the challenge, major additions of other elements is not permitted. Any element or structure that is built to support the grain bins in housing their function will be allowed. (with adequate justification) Hope this helps. Good Luck!

Hello again uni.xyz team, I had two questions regarding the Reutility competition 1. can we use other materials instead of steel inside the bins for floors, pillars, possible walls and etc? 2. The height limit of 9 meters considered from the the zero level in the parcel? 3. When the topography height decreasing, can we increase the height of the building from the building from the bottom by adding a structure to hold the bins? or we should put the bins directly on the ground? Best moments Asad

Hello Asad, 1. You are free to use any other material in combination with the steel bins to accomodate the brief activity and challenge guidelines. 2. The height of 9 metres is to be considered from every point on site where you choose to propose the structures. The total height of built structure on highest contour and the total structure height from lowest contour, both should be 9 meters respectively. (The goal is to limit the structure to a total 9 metres in height, irrespective of site levels.) 3. The bins can be placed directly on the ground or on a base as long as the height limit of 9m is not breached. Hope this helps. Good Luck!

Why the picture about the competition looks like a flat ground, but the CAD files showed that it has about 4m altitude intercept?

0

Hello, We usually source our terrain data from a web service called Digital globe, and the CAD file represents what the contour lines have to offer. The site images are sourced from Google Earth and so the data is either mismatched or outdated. The participants are required to follow the site plan drawing in the CAD file for technical detailing and refer the site images for understanding of the context. Hope this helps. Good Luck!

Hello, can a basement be added to the grain bin?

0

Hello Usman, You can add a basement to the grain bin but it can only go one level down. This basement space can occupy services, maintenance or storage areas. No main lodging spaces can be accommodated in the basement.

I have a question does each of the units have its own kitchenette and bathroom or can there be shared common spaces?

Hello, You are free to provide the required services in any manner to suit your design proposal. Good Luck!
