What Is Exploratory Architecture?
Exploratory architecture is the discipline where architects use design as a research tool rather than a problem-solving tool. It is the practice of testing hypotheses — about form, material, program, ecology, social organization, or cross-disciplinary integration — through design. The result may or may not be a building. In many of the most important examples, it is not.
Exploratory architecture is characterized by:
- Hypothesis-first design. The project starts with a question ("what happens if we grow a building from mycelium?") not a brief ("design a housing block for this site").
- Iteration as methodology. Multiple versions, failed experiments, and recorded findings are part of the work, not discarded by-products.
- Cross-disciplinary inputs. Biology, computer science, physics, performance, materials science, philosophy, political theory — exploratory architects routinely borrow tools from fields beyond the studio.
- Drawing as research output. Unlike client work where drawings serve construction, exploratory architecture treats drawings, models, films, and essays as the deliverable.
- Failure as data. Unsuccessful experiments are recorded, published, and learned from — not hidden.
- Theoretical grounding. Strong exploratory work is positioned within broader intellectual traditions and argues with them explicitly.
The Research-Practice Model: Studios That Think First
The most influential recent shift in architectural practice is the rise of the research-practice model — studios that pair billable client work with a dedicated research arm operating without commissions. The defining examples:
- OMA / AMO (Rem Koolhaas, founded 1975 / AMO founded 1999). AMO is the "anti-OMA" — the think-tank arm of Koolhaas's practice that conducts research regardless of commission. AMO's Countryside, The Future (Guggenheim New York, 2020) was a major exhibition treating the rural and agricultural as the unseen half of contemporary architecture. AMO has produced research for Prada, the EU, Wired, and countless speculative projects that eventually informed built work. The AMO model has become the template for research-practice architecture globally.
- MVRDV's The Why Factory (2008-present). A think-tank co-run by Dutch firm MVRDV and Delft University of Technology, led by Winy Maas. The Why Factory develops speculative city scenarios, publishes books, stages exhibitions, and treats the city as a hypothesis to be tested rather than a problem to be solved. Its publications (including Why Factory Future Cities Series) are core references for exploratory urbanism.
- Foster + Partners R&D Division. Foster established an in-house research and development group that has worked on everything from structural experiments for new airports to sustainable material studies for Bloomberg London HQ. The R&D model has spread to other large firms including Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA CODE), BIG's internal research team, and Gensler Research Institute.
- Herzog & de Meuron's studio practice — less formalized than AMO but systematically iterative, treating each project as an opportunity to experiment with a material, structural concept, or program typology.
- Zaha Hadid Architects Computation and Design (ZHA CODE). The research and computation arm of ZHA, developing parametric and algorithmic tools that inform built work.
The research-practice split is disappearing. Contemporary practices increasingly treat research as a strategic asset rather than an indulgence.
The Paper Architecture Tradition: Drawing as Architecture's Highest Form
For sixty years, some of the most influential architectural work has existed only as drawings, books, and theoretical proposals. This is the paper architecture tradition — the lineage of architects who treated the proposal, not the building, as the design endpoint. The canonical figures:
- Archigram (UK, 1961-1974). Peter Cook, Warren Chalk, Dennis Crompton, Ron Herron, David Greene, Michael Webb. Plug-In City (1964), Walking City (1964), Instant City — the most radical speculative architecture of the 20th century. Archigram's work is a masterclass in framing architecture as a kit of parts, an event, a spectacle, rather than a monument. Their collected work is essential reading.
- Superstudio (Italy, 1966-1978). The Italian radical architecture collective whose Monumento Continuo (Continuous Monument, 1969) was a grid that literally consumed the world — a critique of capitalist urbanism executed as pure drawing. Superstudio's work is both political theory and architectural proposal simultaneously.
- Constant Nieuwenhuys (Netherlands, 1956-1974). The Dutch artist-architect whose New Babylon project imagined a nomadic, playful, post-work city. Spent 18 years developing it through paintings, models, and drawings. Never built. Still one of the most influential speculative urban projects ever produced.
- Yona Friedman (Hungary/France, 1958 onwards). The Spatial City — a megastructure lifted above existing cities on which inhabitants could add their own modular units. A conceptual ancestor of every subsequent flexible urbanism proposal.
- Lebbeus Woods (USA, 1940-2012). The American architect whose work existed almost entirely as drawings. Woods proposed reconstructions for Sarajevo, Havana, San Francisco — buildings that acknowledged rather than erased conflict and decay. His Research Institute for Experimental Architecture was a dedicated platform for paper architecture as a serious discipline. His drawings are now in the permanent collections of MoMA, Centre Pompidou, and other major museums.
- Daniel Libeskind's early work. Before the Jewish Museum Berlin, Libeskind produced the Micromegas (1979) and Chamber Works (1983) drawings — pure architectural drawings that existed as autonomous artworks. His paper architecture preceded and enabled his later built career.
- Peter Eisenman's early houses. The Cardboard Architecture houses (House I through House X, 1967-1982) were explicitly conceptual exercises — each one testing a formal hypothesis independent of client program.
- The Metabolists (Japan, 1960s-70s). Kenzo Tange, Kisho Kurokawa, Kiyonori Kikutake, Fumihiko Maki, Arata Isozaki. Their speculative megastructure proposals (Ocean City, Helix City, Agricultural City) pushed architecture toward biological metaphors and growth-capable urban form. Only a few were built.
Form-Finding Experiments: When Physics Does the Design
One of the most productive exploratory traditions is form-finding — using physical or computational processes to generate architectural geometry, rather than drawing it directly. The architect becomes a setter of conditions rather than a shaper of form. The canonical figures:
- Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926). The first parametric designer. Gaudí used weighted hanging chain models to find the ideal catenary arches for the Sagrada Família and the crypt of Colònia Güell. The photographs of these hanging models, inverted, gave him the structural geometry for buildings he could not have drawn freehand. This is parametric form-finding a century before computation.
- Frei Otto (1925-2015, Pritzker 2015). The German architect-engineer whose Institute for Lightweight Structures in Stuttgart used soap-film models, chain nets, and physical simulations to find minimal-surface forms. His Munich Olympic Stadium roof (1972) was form-found from soap films. His work remains the foundation of contemporary tensile structure design.
- The Institute for Lightweight Structures and Conceptual Design (ILEK). Continued Frei Otto's legacy of physical form-finding research at the University of Stuttgart.
- The parametric revolution. Grasshopper, Rhino, and algorithmic design tools brought Gaudí's and Otto's physical methods into digital form. Contemporary parametric architects — Zaha Hadid Architects, Foster + Partners R&D, UNStudio, and computational studios — run thousands of digital form-finding experiments where Gaudí ran a handful of physical ones.
- Computational form-finding as research practice today. From topology optimization for structural efficiency to evolutionary algorithms for massing studies, form-finding has become one of the most active exploratory research areas in contemporary architecture.
Bio-Design and Biological Architecture: When Buildings Come Alive
One of the most ambitious exploratory frontiers is bio-design — the integration of biological processes, materials, and organisms into architecture. The leading practitioners:
- Neri Oxman and the MIT Media Lab Mediated Matter Group (2010-2021). The most rigorous experimental materials research in contemporary architecture. Oxman's Silk Pavilion (2013) used 6,500 silkworms to deposit silk onto a CNC-generated polygon scaffold, producing a structure that was computationally designed but biologically fabricated. Her Totems series explored melanin-infused glass. Her Aguahoja installations explored water-soluble biopolymers. Oxman coined the term material ecology for this work. Beesley's kinetic, sensor-embedded, living-material installations — including Astrocyte (2017) and Sentient Chamber (2016) — treat architecture as a responsive organism. His work combines synthetic biology, AI, and robotics into spatial installations that move and react to occupants. Living Architecture Systems is a research consortium formalizing this approach.
- Ecovative and MycoWorks. Commercial companies producing mycelium-based materials at scale, increasingly used in architectural prototypes.
- Bacterial cement, algae panels, and synthetic biology experiments. The research frontier includes bacteria that deposit calcium carbonate to create self-healing concrete, algae panels that generate energy and biomass, and synthetic biological systems designed specifically for architectural use.
Design Fiction and Critical Architecture: Using Design to Ask "What If?"
A related but distinct exploratory tradition uses architecture and design as a medium for imagining alternative futures and opening public debate. Design fiction and critical design:
- Dunne & Raby (Anthony Dunne and Fiona Raby). The British design duo who coined the term critical design at the Royal College of Art in the 1990s. Their book Speculative Everything (2013, MIT Press) is the canonical text on design fiction as a methodology. They treat design not as problem-solving but as question-asking — creating artifacts, scenarios, and "what if" worlds to provoke public reflection. Not architects by training, but their methodology is increasingly adopted by exploratory architects.
- Liam Young — "speculative architect." An Australian architect who has built a career without buildings. Young uses film, photography, and scenario-building as his architectural medium. His work appears in museum exhibitions, films, and books rather than construction sites. His 2023 film Planet City imagines a 10-billion-person city that rewilds the rest of the planet. He is the clearest contemporary example of architecture as design fiction.
- Bruce Sterling — the science fiction writer who coined the term "design fiction" in 2005 — remains a theoretical touchstone for practitioners borrowing from the tradition.
- Julian Bleecker (Near Future Laboratory) — technologist and design fiction practitioner whose work has influenced exploratory architects thinking about speculative prototypes.
- Studio Drift (Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta). Dutch art-design studio whose installations cross architecture, performance, and speculative engineering (Franchise Freedom's autonomous drone flocks, Materialism's material deconstructions).
AI-Integrated Design Experimentation
The newest and fastest-growing exploratory frontier is the integration of artificial intelligence into architectural design. As of 2025, surveys suggest approximately 70% of design firms are using AI tools in early design phases. The research questions are real:
- Generative AI as collaborator. Tools like Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, and custom architectural GANs are being used to generate massing studies, materiality explorations, and atmosphere renders faster than human drawing allows.
- Prompt engineering as architectural skill. The question of how to communicate design intent to an AI — through words, reference images, and parameter tuning — is becoming a legitimate architectural competency.

Academic Research Studios: Institutional Support for Experimentation
Some of the most important exploratory architecture comes from academic research studios with institutional backing:
- AA London's Design Research Lab (DRL). Decades of computational and experimental architecture research under successive directors. The DRL has produced a generation of practitioners who think computationally about architecture.
- MIT Media Lab (which housed Oxman's Mediated Matter group). Cross-disciplinary research at the edge of architecture, biology, computation, and materials science.
- Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD). Research studios ranging from urban theory to material experiments. The GSD's project-based research model has produced major speculative proposals (including elements of AMO's Countryside work).

The Ideas Competition Format: Architecture's Research Laboratory
One specific competition format is particularly important for exploratory architecture: the ideas competition. Unlike traditional design competitions that have a client, a site, and a built deliverable expectation, an ideas competition asks only for a proposal — a drawing, an essay, a model, a video, a speculative scenario. There is no built resolution expected. The proposal is the product.
Ideas competitions are ideal for exploratory architecture because they remove the constraints that normally suppress experimentation:
- No client compromise — the brief is the only constraint.
- No cost limit — speculative briefs can imagine anything the designer can afford to draw.
- No site constraint — many ideas briefs are site-agnostic or use imaginary sites.
- No buildability requirement — the proposal is evaluated on conceptual strength, not construction feasibility.
- Cross-disciplinary teams welcome — architects can partner with writers, scientists, filmmakers, biologists, and artists.
Ideas competitions are the closest format architecture has to a research grant. Many of the most important exploratory architects of the last century — Archigram, Superstudio, Libeskind, Koolhaas, Hadid — built their reputations through ideas competition entries years before they built their first buildings.
How to Prepare a Strong Exploratory Architecture Entry
- Start with a hypothesis, not a solution. The most important line in a strong exploratory entry is the opening sentence: "What happens if..." or "We propose that..." or "We argue..." Frame your project as a question being tested, not an answer being delivered.
- Show your research position. Cite the precedents you are working from and against. Archigram, Superstudio, Lebbeus Woods, Oxman, Koolhaas, Dunne & Raby — naming your intellectual lineage builds credibility.
- Treat drawing as thinking, not documentation. Exploratory architecture drawings are argumentative. Every line, section, and annotation should be making a case.
- Include the research method. How did you arrive at your proposal? Through physical modeling? Parametric generation? Biological collaboration? AI iteration? Document the process, not just the result.
- Engage theory explicitly. Exploratory architecture lives inside intellectual traditions — post-structuralism, ecological thinking, cybernetic theory, critical design, biomaterials research. Don't hide the theoretical framing; make it visible.
- Own the speculation. Juries for exploratory competitions reward ambition. Playing safe is usually the worst strategy. Take a real risk.
- Cross-disciplinary collaboration is welcome. If your project draws from biology, AI, performance, or material science, show the collaborator(s). Credit them. Integrate their expertise into the design argument.
- Narrate the "what if" convincingly. The best exploratory entries are essentially short stories with drawings — they make the jury want to live in the world you propose.
