These are not arbitrary categories. Each typology carries centuries of accumulated design intelligence. A plaza is not just any open space in a city — it is a specific spatial type with its own history, proportions, social rituals, and design conventions dating from the Roman forum to Camillo Sitte's 1889 treatise on the art of building cities. A masterplan is not just a drawing — it is a typological genre with its own lineage from Haussmann's Paris through Howard's Garden City to Le Corbusier's Chandigarh and contemporary 15-minute city plans. The Urban Design Tradition: From Haussmann to the 15-Minute City
Urban design has one of the longest and most actively contested intellectual traditions in the built environment. The names and moments every practitioner should know:
- Haussmann's Paris (1853-1870): Baron Georges-Eugène Haussmann's radical remaking of Paris under Napoleon III. The canonical 19th-century masterplan: cut new boulevards through dense medieval fabric, impose uniform facade heights, create public squares, build sewers and water systems. Letchworth (1903) and Welwyn Garden City (1920) were built. The first typological alternative to industrial urbanism.
- Le Corbusier — Plan Voisin (1925), Ville Radieuse (1935), Chandigarh (1950s): the Swiss-French architect who proposed radical modernist masterplans — tower blocks in parks, segregated traffic, rationalized land use. Chandigarh (with Pierre Jeanneret, Maxwell Fry, and Jane Drew) was his only realized city masterplan. His legacy is contested: visionary for some, the source of 20th-century urban failures for others.
- Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer — Brasilia (1956-1960): the most complete modernist masterplan ever built. A new capital designed from scratch on empty Brazilian savanna. A case study in both the ambitions and the limits of modernist urbanism.
- Jane Jacobs — The Death and Life of Great American Cities (1961): the book that changed everything. Jacobs demolished the modernist masterplan orthodoxy by arguing that cities work when they have short blocks, mixed uses, old buildings alongside new, and density of people. The founding text of contemporary human-scale urbanism.
- Kevin Lynch — The Image of the City (1960): Lynch's empirical study of how people navigate cities gave urban design a new vocabulary — paths, edges, districts, nodes, landmarks. Still the canonical framework for legible urban form.
- William H. Whyte — The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces (1980): Whyte's film and book studied how people actually use plazas and squares in New York. He found that movable chairs, sunlight, food, and proximity to trees made public spaces work. His findings became the evidence base for human-scale plaza design worldwide.
- Jan Gehl — Life Between Buildings (1971), Cities for People (2010): the Danish architect whose methodical study of Copenhagen's pedestrian streets has reshaped urban design globally. Gehl consulted on the transformation of New York's Times Square, Moscow's streets, London's Oxford Street, and dozens of other cities. "Cities for people" has become a global urban design movement.
- Andrés Duany, Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, Peter Calthorpe — New Urbanism (1990s): the American movement that revived traditional walkable neighbourhood forms as an alternative to sprawl. Seaside, Florida (1981) was the canonical first built example. The Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) and its Charter Awards continue to shape the tradition.
- Rem Koolhaas — Delirious New York (1978), S,M,L,XL (1995): Koolhaas reframed Manhattan as a cultural script in which buildings are characters. His urban theory work is the most influential late-20th-century architectural response to the metropolis.
- James Corner, Charles Waldheim, Mohsen Mostafavi — Landscape Urbanism (2000s): the theoretical move that treats landscape as the primary structural medium of contemporary urbanism. James Corner Field Operations' High Line (2009-2014) became the built manifesto of the movement.
- Mike Lydon and Anthony Garcia — Tactical Urbanism (2015): the manifesto for small-scale, short-term, community-driven interventions as a tool for urban change. "Lighter, quicker, cheaper" became a rallying cry for parklet, pop-up, and incremental street design.

Urban Design Competition Types
Masterplans and District Plans
The largest-scale urban design competitions: new neighbourhoods, city extensions, brownfield redevelopments, and whole-district plans. Budapest's Rákosrendező Masterplan competition (244 hectares, explicit 15-minute city brief, winners announced March 2026) is a canonical contemporary example. Masterplans ask architects to think at the scale of the block group, to reconcile transport, housing, commerce, and civic amenities within a coherent vision.
Streetscape and Complete Streets Design

Waterfront and Harbourfront Redevelopment
Former industrial ports and waterfronts converted to mixed-use public space. Oslo's Bjørvika district (Snohetta Opera House), Copenhagen's harbourfront, Hamburg's HafenCity, Barcelona's post-Olympic waterfront, and Manhattan's Hudson River Park are canonical 21st-century examples. Transit-Oriented Development (TOD)

Superblocks and Neighborhood Pedestrianization

Post-Industrial Urban Regeneration
The conversion of former industrial zones — steel mills, shipyards, freight rail yards, power stations, abandoned factories — into new urban districts. Climate Adaptation as Urban Design Typology
Climate adaptation is increasingly treated as a distinct urban design typology in its own right. - New Urbanism (Duany, Plater-Zyberk, Calthorpe) — the return of the walkable mixed-use block. Traditional building forms, clear street hierarchy, neighborhood centres, pedestrian-first design. Championed by the Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) and its Charter Awards.
- Landscape Urbanism (Corner, Waldheim) — landscape as the primary structural medium of the city. The High Line is the built manifesto. Treats ecology and landscape infrastructure as the starting point for urban form.

How to Prepare a Strong Urban Design Competition Entry
- Read the brief through a typological lens. Is this a masterplan? A streetscape? A plaza? A waterfront? A TOD? Each has different conventions, precedents, and jury expectations. Name the type explicitly.
- Anchor your scheme in the disciplinary tradition. Is your plan closer to Jacobs or Corbusier? Gehl or Moses? New Urbanism, Landscape Urbanism, or Tactical Urbanism? Juries reward entries that know where they stand.
- Study canonical precedents. For masterplans: Haussmann's Paris, Howard's Letchworth, Costa's Brasilia, Calthorpe's transit villages. For plazas: Sitte's medieval squares, Whyte's urban parks, Gehl's Strøget. For waterfronts: Copenhagen's harbourfront, Snohetta's Bjørvika. Reference them honestly.
