Ascending House by Rushi Shah Architects: A Sculptural Home in Ahmedabad Rooted in Light and Spatial Flow
Ascending House features stepped massing, sacred geometry, and natural light play, blending exposed concrete with lush landscape integration in Ahmedabad.
Located in the culturally rich city of Ahmedabad, India, Ascending House by Rushi Shah Architects redefines contemporary residential design through a play of ascending masses, natural light, and tactile materials. Completed in 2022, the 650 m² residence draws inspiration from the modular arrangement of Jenga blocks, resulting in a dynamic massing of volumes that step upwards—forming terraces, spatial niches, and volumetric play across its elevations.

The house’s fragmented structure accommodates private and semi-private spaces at various levels, with each floor enjoying its own open terrace. These outdoor extensions not only provide ventilation and natural light but also act as visual relief elements that break down the overall bulk of the residence. A blend of exposed concrete, Jaisalmer stone, and textured surfaces weaves the architecture into its landscaped surroundings, curated in collaboration with Tattva Landscapes.
A standout element of the design is the circular concrete puja space, reflecting the clients’ spiritual priorities. Crowned with a fixed glass slit, this 16-foot-high sacred volume becomes a light sculpture during the day, as the sun casts crescent-shaped shadows that shift with time—creating a constantly evolving interior experience. The circular form juxtaposed against the linear geometry of the house adds a meditative, sculptural presence to the home.

Inside, interior designers JPA introduce refined materiality and warm palettes that complement the home's architectural shell. Double-height volumes, such as the dining area opening into a stone-clad courtyard, enhance spatial fluidity and offer immersive views of nature. A white gravel courtyard doubles as a breakfast nook or an evening coffee retreat, blurring the boundary between indoors and out.
The veranda—a key spatial transition zone—is thoughtfully aligned with the landscape level, creating a seamless flow into the garden. Overlooked by a wooden canopy, this shaded space is framed by boulders, water features, and tropical plantations, offering a contemplative pause amidst nature. The exposed RCC wall and lotus pond form a tranquil backdrop that anchors the veranda in material and emotional depth.

From its multi-level planning and climate-sensitive features to its material honesty, Ascending House stands as a poetic and functional architectural statement that elevates everyday living through the power of form, light, and context.
