Osari Residence: A Contemporary Take on Traditional Courtyard House Design
Osari Residence in Amravati redefines traditional courtyard house design by blending Wada architecture with modern functionality and climate-responsive elements.
A Home Rooted in Tradition and Climate
Osari Residence, designed by Mind Manifestation Design, is a stunning reinterpretation of traditional courtyard house design, blending heritage elements with modern sensibilities. Located in Amravati, India, a city known for its extreme climate with hot summers and chilly winters, this home serves as a holiday retreat for a multi-generational family. Its design is deeply rooted in local architectural traditions, ensuring cultural continuity while addressing contemporary living needs.

Architectural Inspiration: The Essence of Wada Architecture
The design of Osari Residence draws from the vernacular Wada architecture, a style historically prevalent in Maharashtra. It incorporates key elements such as the Osari (verandah), Chowk (central courtyard), Devadi (guard/store room), Dalan/Baithak (living spaces), Devghar (worship area), and Swayampak Ghar (kitchen). These traditional spatial arrangements create a home that fosters interaction, communal living, and an intrinsic connection with cultural heritage.

At the heart of the house lies the courtyard, anchored by the sacred Tulsi Vrundavan, a symbol of spirituality and family bonding. This space acts as the nucleus of the home, hosting festivals, gatherings, and everyday moments of togetherness. Architectural elements like bridges, Jharokhas (bay windows), and balconies reinforce the sense of openness and connection between different levels of the house.

Climate-Responsive Design: Harnessing Light and Ventilation
Considering Amravati’s climate, the residence is designed with strategic spatial planning to enhance thermal comfort. The bedrooms on the upper level are positioned to provide shade to the central courtyard during peak afternoon hours, reducing heat gain and ensuring a naturally cool environment. The ground-floor suite is specifically designed for senior citizens, ensuring accessibility and convenience.

One of the most striking features of the house is the introduction of semi-circular vaulted roofs, crafted from 3-inch thick Ferro-Concrete. These vaults not only add a distinctive aesthetic but also enhance thermal insulation, making the home comfortable throughout the year. The use of metal for structural elements such as balconies and bridges further complements the rustic yet contemporary identity of the house.

Material Palette: A Harmonious Blend of Old and New
Osari Residence embraces a rich material palette that balances tradition with modernity. Exposed brickwork juxtaposed with muted plastered surfaces creates a tactile and visually warm environment. Internal walls finished with lime putty contribute to natural thermal comfort, keeping the interiors cool during summer and warm during winter. The integration of natural materials enhances the sensory experience, making the home feel inviting and timeless.

The thoughtful composition of materials extends to the furniture and decor, where handcrafted wooden elements and metal accents add layers of texture. The design philosophy revolves around creating an organic, lived-in aesthetic that evolves with time, reflecting the passage of generations within the home.

A Timeless Family Abode: Redefining Traditional Courtyard House Design
Osari Residence is more than just a house; it is an embodiment of cultural heritage, family values, and architectural ingenuity. The interplay between open and enclosed spaces fosters a sense of togetherness while respecting individual privacy. Each design element, from the courtyard’s sacred significance to the vaulted roofs’ climatic responsiveness, contributes to an experience that is both nostalgic and forward-thinking.

By seamlessly integrating traditional courtyard house design with contemporary materials and techniques, Mind Manifestation Design has created a home that not only respects its roots but also sets a precedent for future residential architecture. Osari Residence stands as a testament to how vernacular wisdom can be reinterpreted to meet the evolving needs of modern families, ensuring that tradition remains an integral part of contemporary living.
