SCHOOL OF WILL AND IMAGINATION
This is a school that stimulates students' creativity and cultivates their willpower
Located in the Birchcliff community with beautiful environment in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the school is established in a square field. To make students fully contact the surrounding natural environment and deeply feel their relationship with the building in action, three undulating and flowing roofs have been designed and created, which are linked with each other. In the meantime, the place where the roof intersects is often the place where the staircase and space transform in the interior, and the opening of the holes along the roof structure is conducted, making students and teachers sometimes stay away from the roof, sometimes close to the roof, or even touch them. Different scenes are also faced by the transformation of space. As seasons and time change, the purpose of the design is to let students feel the subtle and delicate changes of the building in every moment.
The courtyard space of the center is enclosed by the learning center and activity center of the school, and each functional block is connected by the main traffic curves. In this mobile traffic mode, it can help deepen students’ experience of architecture in the process of walking. The fun of each small space is generated due to different directions and angles, which is exactly the exploration given to school.
The first task of education is to let a person become a person, and his or her contribution to society is natural. In this school, no educators exist for others, since it is a place where can satisfy the self-education of everyone. Here, students are encouraged to create their own set of philosophy that can be practiced. The protection or rediscovery of students' curiosity and excitement are the task of the school.
Students' willpower should also be cultivated after the excitement, that is, the sense of seriousness and sacred attitude towards what they need to do now... Therefore, the school I imagine should be a place where a person can be cultivated to be upright, but the environment is soft and changeable in the long run. In this scheme, it has set up flowing traffic, twisting glass and different viewing angles to the sky, which hopes to make the creation of a space to stimulate imagination and carry many possibilities.
The desire for self-expression promotes the formation of a person's passion for learning, especially those independently created and thought out by himself. Therefore, students should be encouraged to learn and express themselves in their own ways. In the meantime, a large number of exhibition spaces exist in this school, which frequently hold the exhibition activities of class forms, small groups, personal forms and so on. The community and parents can participate in some periods to make the discussion with teachers and students together.
Having developed into the concept of middle school education, Reggio Emilia's concept of early childhood education should pay less attention to subjects and exams in contrast with traditional education methods, which should let students create and define subjects by themselves to form their own learning plans. Students who have relevant contacts and similar interests should set up research groups to carry out the research on their favorite topics, make the expression of their achievements in exclusive ways, and hold exhibitions on a regular basis. Instead of simply teaching students, teachers should pay more attention to the discovery of students’ potential. What’s more, the participation of parents and communities should be encouraged to inject social force into the school, so that students, parents and teachers are able to inspire each other.
The "third teacher" of education lies in the environment. The scheme also provides a group space beside the classroom in addition to providing a basic classroom for teaching. Students are able to enter the discussion status as soon as possible after the teaching. As a significant "workshop", the interlayer space can flexibly arrange the facilities needed by students. The north part of the building as the core activity area provides students' other hobby activities with a professional place.
It is hoped that the colorful environment here can relax your body and mind, as well as enable you to fully imagine your creativity, dreams and future. After you enter the learning status, it is hoped that you can also immerse in it, since you understand that you are sacred and serious about doing what you love.
