Located in Angamaly near Kochi, On the Brooks House by Monsoon Collective is a thoughtfully designed single-story residence that merges traditional Kerala architecture with contemporary spatial design. Spread across 2,900 sq ft, this 2022 residential project exemplifies sustainable architecture, vernacular material usage, and climate-responsive design strategies.

Concept and Spatial Experience

Inspired by the fluid movement of a natural brook, the house integrates water channels that flow around and through the built form. This unique architectural concept creates a multi-sensory living experience, especially during the monsoon season when rainwater activates the channels. The design establishes visual and physical connectivity between indoor and outdoor spaces, enhancing spatial fluidity and user interaction with nature.

Design Philosophy and Vernacular Integration

The project reinterprets key elements of traditional Kerala homes while adapting them for modern lifestyles. Features such as courtyards, verandahs, and transitional spaces like the “thinnai” have been reimagined to suit contemporary living. The entrance, inspired by the iconic “padippura,” creates a strong architectural identity while maintaining cultural relevance.

Elongated visual corridors guide movement through the home, culminating in a semi-open courtyard enclosed by patterned brick walls. These perforated surfaces allow light, air, and views to interact dynamically with the built environment, reinforcing passive design principles.

Materiality and Craftsmanship

The house emphasizes locally sourced and upcycled materials, including exposed brick, concrete, steel, cane, and glass. A standout feature is the sinuous brick wall composed of semi-circular arches, symbolizing the flow of water and contrasting with the linear building form.

The car porch canopy, crafted from hand-cut cane reeds within a steel frame, highlights innovative material reuse. Above, a floating concrete parasol roof adds visual lightness, achieved through strategically placed slit windows that separate the roof from the walls.

Sustainable Design Strategies

Sustainability is central to the project’s design approach. The parasol roof functions as a rainwater harvesting system, collecting and directing water into channels that flow through the house and into the courtyard. This water is eventually reused for irrigating the surrounding landscape, promoting efficient resource management.

The integration of natural ventilation, daylight optimization, and climate-responsive planning ensures reduced energy consumption while enhancing indoor comfort.
