Transforming Aleppo: Urban Design for Cultural Revival

The war in Aleppo has created a temporal void, dividing time into what was "before" and "after" the conflict. To bridge this gap and restore continuity, the design concept focuses on creating an Urban Regeneration Space—a transcultural spatial-temporal hub fostering connection and change.

The concept of Urban Regeneration draws inspiration from the Japanese Shinto Zen Buddhist philosophy of "Ma," which refers to the space or void between entities. This philosophy emphasizes the connections and interrelations that emerge from these gaps. By incorporating this perspective, the design aims to redefine the site as an urban void, a transformative space where time, people, and culture converge.

Phoenix Garden: A Public Oasis

At the heart of this vision is the Phoenix Garden, a public space designed to bring together diverse social groups. This garden acts as a platform for convergence, fostering peace and coexistence. Located in the heart of Aleppo, it serves as a symbol of resilience and cultural unity, offering shade and vitality through its lush date palm grove.

A Cultural Space for All

The project "Co-Existence" envisions the reconstruction of Aleppo as a global heritage site, uniting the Citadel, Souk, and historical monuments into a cohesive cultural gathering zone. This transformation aims to attract both locals and tourists, highlighting Aleppo’s rich history and potential for renewal.

By reshaping the urban landscape into a dynamic, inclusive, and sustainable space, the project not only honors the city’s heritage but also redefines its future.
