111 House by S+S Architects: A Riverside Pavilion of Versatile Living in Thailand

Located along a tranquil canal in Thailand, the 111 House byS+S Architects exemplifies modern riverside residential design, blending functionality, transparency, and seamless indoor-outdoor living. Completed in 2024 and spanning 568 m², this pavilion redefines the concept of a multipurpose home, tailored to the homeowner’s vision of a versatile, family-centered lifestyle.

A Design Born from Functional Needs

The project originated from the homeowner’s desire for a single space that could accommodate diverse activities. Unlike the previous residence, which lacked a central area for gatherings, 111 House was conceived as a multifunctional pavilion. It is designed to host daily lounging, dining, recreational family activities, and small-scale social events with friends. The result is a home that prioritizes flexibility without compromising aesthetic clarity.

Embracing the Riverside Context

A defining feature of 111 House is its prime location adjacent to a large canal. The surrounding garden-like landscape remains largely untouched, providing a serene escape from the city’s fast pace. Panoramic river views and natural breezes shape the home’s experience, creating an environment of calm and connection with nature. The riverside setting is intentionally left open, with no fences, allowing a seamless integration of the house, garden, and canal.

Transparent Architecture and Indoor-Outdoor Flow

The pavilion is a single-story structure wrapped entirely in glass, offering unobstructed views of the river from every angle. Sliding glass walls enable flexible spatial arrangements, connecting the indoor living areas with terraces and outdoor riverside zones. This design fosters fluid transitions between private and social spaces, particularly during gatherings and parties. By prioritizing visual and physical connectivity, the architecture enhances both the homeowner’s daily routines and entertainment needs.

Simplicity That Highlights Nature

The architectural language of 111 House emphasizes minimalism, ensuring the design complements rather than competes with the natural surroundings. Semi-outdoor spaces, including covered walkways, connectors linking the new pavilion with the older house, and open terraces, create a harmonious interplay between built form and landscape. Every view is carefully considered—from inside looking out and from outside looking in—so that the home maintains a balanced dialogue with its riverside environment.

Nighttime Ambience and Riverside Connectivity

A long staircase running parallel to the canal functions as both a circulation path and a visual feature, illuminated at night to guide residents and guests. This thoughtful design element reinforces the connection between the pavilion and the river while creating a cohesive nocturnal aesthetic. By avoiding rigid boundaries, 111 House establishes an integrated spatial experience where architecture, garden, and water coexist as a unified whole.

Materials and Interior Collaboration

S+S Architects, led by Sarunyu Uawisetwattana, collaborated with Golfkris Design for the interiors, emphasizing open, light-filled spaces that complement the minimalist structure. Manufacturers such as Live Lighting, Modern-Glass Co., LTD, and NSC contributed to the project, ensuring high-quality materials that maximize transparency, ventilation, and comfort.
