1. SITE CONTEXT & THE NECESSITY OF CITIZEN PARTICIPATION
The project site is situated at a critical landscape boundary in Australia, flanked by boundless farmland to the north and a 6-meter-wide road adjacent to a dense eucalyptus forest to the south.
In the context of modern Australian wildlife research, traditional top-down conservation methods face severe limits due to vast geographical scales and rapid environmental changes. Citizen science has emerged not merely as an auxiliary option, but as an absolute necessity. However, current participatory research remains fragmented, limited by high psychological and spatial barriers between professional scientists and the public.
This project begins by bridging this gap, transforming a site positioned between human cultivation (farmland) and wild ecosystems (forest) into an open infrastructure for public-driven ecological research.
2. CORE STRATEGY: THE THREE-PRONGED EVOLUTIONARY PROGRAM
At the heart of this proposal is the Three-Pronged Evolutionary Program—a transformative system that tracks and nurtures the personal growth of everyday citizens through architectural prompts.
Novice citizens are initially drawn into the facility through low-barrier entries like the museum and guided along the outdoor corridor. As their interest deepens through spatial engagement and foundational training, they evolve into advanced participants. From this stage, their journey branches out into three distinct evolutionary pathways:
- Advanced Collaborative Researcher (Co-Space): Citizens transform into high-level collaborators who work directly alongside professional scientists in the 2nd-floor Co-Working Spaces, engaging in active discussions, analyzing field samples, and debating data to drive impactful research outcomes.
- Citizen Educator: Experienced citizens step into teaching roles to mentor newcomers. By taking over entry-level educational responsibilities from professional researchers, they significantly relieve the scientists' academic burden, allowing researchers to focus intensely on core wildlife studies.
- Advanced Academic Advancement: Inspired by their experience, highly dedicated citizens choose to pursue specialized higher education, departing for advanced institutions to become the next generation of professional ecological scientists.
3. A GLOBAL PROTOTYPE FOR FUTURE RESEARCH FACILITIES
This evolutionary loop extends beyond a localized wildlife research center in Australia. We propose this project as a scalable, universal spatial prototype adaptable to various scientific domains worldwide—from marine biology to urban climate studies.
By shifting the paradigm of scientific institutions from closed, fortress-like facilities to open, participatory ecosystems, our project offers a vision for how future research architecture should evolve globally. It establishes a sustainable model where public engagement accelerates scientific breakthroughs, ultimately fostering positive ecological impacts on a global scale.
4. SPATIAL ZONING: THE WI-FI LAYOUT
To physically embody the Three-Pronged Evolutionary Program, the building adopts a Wi-Fi Layout—a radiating spatial configuration that controls accessibility and visual connectivity.
The southern sector, positioned nearest to the eucalyptus forest and access road, houses the Citizen Exhibition Museum to welcome the public with minimum entry barriers. An outdoor corridor loops behind the museum volumes, acting as an intuitive spatial guide that draws visitor flow into the central lobby.
Through this radial structure, the building manages a gradual transition: starting from public-facing exhibition zones, moving through collaborative transitional spaces, and culminating in secure, high-precision research environments.
5. FLOOR PLAN & PROGRAMMATIC DISTRIBUTION
The programmatic organization strictly reinforces the operational flow between field acquisition, public engagement, and laboratory processing:
- Ground Floor (1st Floor Plan): Focuses on public reception, field operations, administrative support, and initial sample handling. It integrates the Citizen Exhibition Museum, Outdoor Corridor, Main Lobby, Creative Learning Stairs (an open hub for informal interaction), Administrative Offices, Mudroom, Equipment Storage, Sample Classification Room, and the Wildlife Bio-Monitoring Room. The direct connection between the mudroom, storage, and field rooms allows researchers and citizens to seamlessly transition between outdoor field monitoring and indoor processing.
- Second Floor (2nd Floor Plan): Dedicated to high-level analysis and interdisciplinary collaboration. It houses Co-Working & Collaboration Spaces (Co-Space), Digital Data Analysis Lab, Sample Analysis Lab, and DNA & eDNA Analysis Labs. A clear spatial hierarchy of sanitation and security is established along the circulation, progressively elevating from the Digital Data Analysis Lab to the Sample Analysis Lab, and culminating in the sterile, high-security environment required for the DNA & eDNA Analysis Labs.
6. ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE: BIOMIMETIC KINETIC FACADE
The architectural envelope dynamically responds to the extreme Australian heat through a Biomimetic Kinetic Facade, inspired by the natural bark-shedding mechanism of surrounding eucalyptus trees.
Equipped with integrated thermal sensors and electric actuator motors, the facade continuously monitors ambient temperatures. When temperatures peak, the system automatically lifts responsive timber grilles and panel layers. Mimicking the thermal regulation of eucalyptus trees, this kinetic movement opens the building skin to facilitate passive cross-ventilation while shading interior spaces from harsh solar radiation.
Combining translucent glass with automated wooden louvers, the facade achieves an optimal equilibrium between energy efficiency, thermal comfort, and privacy for sensitive laboratory work.
