Layers of Balance: Designing AROHA Ayurveda Wellness Center
Aroha is an Ayurvedic wellness center designed as a place of healing, reflection, and reconnection with nature. The project is rooted in the concept of Layers of Balance, inspired by the holistic philosophy of Ayurveda, which views well-being as a balance between body, mind, spirit, and the natural environment.
The massing strategy emerged from the idea that balance is not a single condition but a composition of interconnected layers. Rather than creating one dominant building volume, the project is organized as a series of horizontal layers that follow the natural topography of the site. These layers create a gradual spatial experience, allowing visitors to move through different atmospheres of healing and relaxation.
Located in Ahmedabad, the project responds to the region's climate and architectural heritage. Traditional passive design principles such as courtyards, shaded walkways, and perforated screens are reinterpreted in a contemporary manner. These elements help reduce heat gain, encourage natural ventilation, and create comfortable transitional spaces throughout the complex.
At the heart of the project lies a central courtyard, functioning as a breathing space that connects all major program areas. Natural light, vegetation, and airflow penetrate deep into the building, strengthening the relationship between architecture and nature. The courtyard becomes a place for contemplation, gathering, and quiet interaction.
Water plays an important role in the healing experience. Reflecting pools and water features are integrated throughout the project to introduce sound, movement, and sensory comfort. Together with the landscape, they create a calm environment that supports physical and mental restoration.
Material selections are inspired by Ahmedabad's local architectural identity. Sandstone, timber, and perforated jali walls are used to establish a connection with regional building traditions while providing environmental performance. The filtered light passing through these screens creates changing patterns of shadow, enriching the spatial experience throughout the day.
Aroha is more than a wellness facility; it is an architectural interpretation of balance. Through its layered organization, connection to nature, and integration of traditional healing principles, the project offers a journey toward physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
