AÚNA Restaurant by MRD Arquitectos: A Fusion of Architecture and Gastronomy in Mexico City
AÚNA Restaurant by MRD Arquitectos blends architecture and gastronomy, offering a unique, authentic space with natural light and Mexican craftsmanship.
A Harmonious Blend of Architecture and Culinary Art
AÚNA Restaurant, designed by MRD Arquitectos, is an exquisite architectural concept that brings together the realms of architecture and gastronomy. Located in Ciudad de México, this space is more than just a place to dine—it is a sanctuary designed to gather, connect, and create unforgettable moments. Rooted in core values such as authenticity, simplicity, and a deep connection to the land, AÚNA offers a unique atmosphere where the warmth of home meets the luxury of fine design.

The Vision Behind AÚNA: A Space Without Pretensions
The design of AÚNA focuses on celebrating the raw beauty of materials, craftsmanship, and the simple elegance of rustic elements. This project emphasizes local integration, ensuring that everything from furniture to decor is crafted by Mexican artisans. The goal is to create a refuge that transports visitors away from the chaotic energy of CDMX (Mexico City), offering them a peaceful oasis.

Architecture and Interior Design: A Seamless Blend of Natural Light and Open Spaces
One of the main challenges of the project was transforming an existing house with an irregularly-shaped, dimly lit courtyard into a welcoming and functional space. The architects addressed this by integrating natural light through strategic openings, such as zenithal entrances. As visitors approach the restaurant, they are greeted by a corridor surrounded by lush vegetation, leading them into the main lobby, a space where every detail, from furniture to music, creates a sensory experience.
The design of the restaurant evokes the charm of traditional Mexican mansions, with a central patio serving as the heart of the space. This patio, adorned with volcanic rocks and surrounded by iron windows and mud roofing, creates a connection between the seasons and the changing nature of the culinary offerings. The architects employed inclined lightweight pine wood covers to gently allow natural light to filter through, enhancing the atmosphere without overpowering it.

A Gastronomic Experience: The Open Kitchen and Smokehouse
AÚNA’s terrace serves as the restaurant's culinary heart, where the gastronomic magic unfolds. Here, an open kitchen and a smoke kitchen become part of the experience, allowing diners to interact with the cooking process. This integration of culinary art and architecture not only enhances the dining experience but also reflects the collaborative spirit of the project, with chefs, designers, architects, and artisans all playing a vital role in bringing the vision to life.

A Collaborative Masterpiece of Architecture and Gastronomy
The collaboration between architects, designers, landscapers, artisans, and chefs has resulted in a space that embodies both the simplicity and luxury of Mexican culture. AÚNA Restaurant is a powerful example of how architecture can serve as an immersive backdrop for a truly exceptional culinary experience. Through its thoughtful design and attention to detail, AÚNA is a reflection of the raw beauty and authenticity that defines MRD Arquitectos’ work.
