Designing a Playground Through Sustainable Architecture

BAMBOO BLOCK is a proposal for a creative playground and learning environment designed around the everyday needs of children living in refugee camps. Developed by BBM Group A, the project combines play, education, recreation and community interaction within a compact architectural system built largely from local and inexpensive materials.

Rather than approaching the playground as a collection of isolated recreational objects, BAMBOO BLOCK treats play as an architectural framework. Classrooms, flexible learning areas, climbing structures, viewing platforms, sandpits and outdoor courts are organized as interconnected environments that children can explore throughout the day.

At the centre of the proposal is a clear sustainable architecture strategy. Bamboo, rammed earth, straw and timber are used alongside modular construction techniques to reduce dependence on complex building systems. Components are intended to be relatively easy to construct, transport, dismantle and reassemble.

This combination of adaptability and material simplicity allows the project to respond to the uncertain conditions often associated with refugee settlements.

Architecture Responding to the Needs of Refugee Children

The design begins by considering the circumstances of its intended users.

Children living in refugee camps may have limited access to safe spaces for play, communication, learning and rest. BAMBOO BLOCK therefore prioritizes an environment that feels protected while still encouraging exploration and social interaction.

The designers organize the site into several complementary zones rather than creating one large playground.

These include an indoor learning area, semi-open play spaces, a partially shaded sandpit and a fully outdoor sports court. Together, they create a gradual transition between enclosed, shaded and open environments.

The strategy is particularly important because the project occupies a relatively constrained site surrounded by an existing settlement.

Instead of treating that limitation as a disadvantage, the proposal creates a sequence of smaller spaces linked by circulation routes. Children can move from quieter classrooms and reading areas toward increasingly active playground zones.

This produces a varied landscape within a compact footprint.

A Modular Architecture Built Around the 2 x 2 Metre Block

One of the defining ideas behind BAMBOO BLOCK is its architectural modularity.

The primary spatial system is based on a 2 metre by 2 metre by 2 metre module. These units form the basic organizational framework for both learning and recreational environments.

The repetition of a standardized module gives the project an adaptable architectural language.

Individual blocks can be combined to create classrooms, reading spaces, activity areas, porches or larger gathering spaces. Their arrangement can also respond to changing programmatic requirements without requiring an entirely new building system.

The modular approach becomes particularly significant in the context of refugee settlements, where population, available land and community requirements may change over time.

Instead of designing a static building, BAMBOO BLOCK proposes architecture that can potentially grow, reorganize or be replicated.

The playground therefore operates less as a finished architectural object and more as a kit of spatial possibilities.

Flexible Learning Instead of the Conventional Classroom

Education is integrated directly into the playground.

The learning building contains classrooms, reading areas, flexible spaces, activity zones and a porch. Rather than defining every room permanently, movable screens allow spaces to be connected or separated according to different activities.

Opening partitions can transform smaller rooms into larger communal interiors suitable for group learning, indoor play or even film screenings.

This adaptability challenges the idea of the classroom as a rigid educational container.

Learning, recreation and social interaction overlap instead.

Children can move between structured teaching environments and informal play spaces without leaving the larger architectural system.

The configuration supports a broader understanding of learning in which creativity, movement and communication become as important as formal instruction.

Furniture Becomes Part of the Modular System

BAMBOO BLOCK extends its modular design philosophy beyond architecture and into furniture.

Smaller 400 x 400 x 200 mm modules can be assembled in multiple combinations to create desks, chairs, benches, bookshelves, tables and stepped seating.

This creates a second scale of adaptability within the project.

Children and educators are not limited to fixed furniture arrangements. Individual pieces can be reorganized depending on whether the space is being used for reading, teaching, collaborative activities or performance.

The system also introduces an element of participation.

Furniture becomes something that can be configured rather than simply occupied.

Through these movable components, children can interact with the spatial organization of their surroundings, potentially encouraging experimentation and creativity.

Architecture becomes something they can modify.

Bamboo as Structure, Screen and Architectural Identity

Bamboo plays a central role throughout the project.

It appears as columns, beams, wall elements, windows, screens and roof reinforcement. Rather than being applied as a decorative material, bamboo becomes part of the structural and environmental logic of the architecture.

The lightweight framework creates shaded spaces while maintaining visual permeability.

Bamboo screens help control sunlight and define boundaries without completely isolating children from adjacent spaces. Open roof structures and covered verandas also create transitional environments between indoor and outdoor areas.

The resulting architecture feels deliberately lightweight.

Instead of heavy enclosed volumes, the project is composed of layered frames, screens and shaded platforms.

This gives BAMBOO BLOCK a visual language closely connected to its construction method.

Local Materials and Low-Cost Sustainable Architecture

Material selection reinforces the project's sustainable architecture strategy.

Alongside bamboo, the proposal incorporates rammed earth, straw, timber and locally accessible construction materials.

Rammed earth forms solid lower wall sections, while bamboo is used for lightweight upper structures and screens. Straw-based roofing solutions create shade and shelter while keeping construction relatively simple.

Using locally available materials reduces the need to transport specialized components over long distances.

The proposal also seeks to simplify fabrication so that construction does not depend on highly specialized industrial processes.

This becomes particularly relevant for humanitarian environments, where supply chains may be unreliable and construction budgets constrained.

Sustainability here is therefore not treated only as an environmental objective.

It is connected to availability, affordability, repairability and construction knowledge.

Designing for Disassembly and Reassembly

Another important element is the temporary or semi-permanent character of the architecture.

Modular components are intended to be relatively easy to assemble, dismantle, transport and rebuild.

That strategy makes BAMBOO BLOCK more adaptable to conditions where communities may relocate or where existing facilities need to expand.

Instead of investing entirely in immovable infrastructure, the project considers how architectural elements might continue to be useful even if circumstances change.

This makes modular construction particularly valuable.

A classroom module could theoretically be replicated. Playground platforms could be reorganized. Furniture units could be redistributed. Lightweight structural components could be repaired or replaced individually.

The project therefore links sustainable architecture with the concept of architectural reversibility.

Four Complementary Zones for Learning and Play

The site plan divides the playground into four principal functional areas.

The first contains indoor learning spaces.

The second forms a semi-open play environment.

The third introduces a shaded sandpit.

The fourth becomes an outdoor sports and activity court.

These spaces are interconnected by circulation paths, allowing children to move intuitively through the site.

Rather than creating abrupt boundaries between functions, the layout supports gradual transitions.

A child might move from a classroom into a shaded porch, continue toward swings or seesaws, climb onto an elevated platform and finally reach the basketball court.

This sequence transforms circulation itself into part of the play experience.

The Sandpit as an Indoor-Outdoor Threshold

The sandpit is positioned close to the classroom building and contains play equipment including swings and seesaws.

Its architectural significance lies in its relationship with the learning environment.

Rather than placing recreational areas far from classrooms, the project creates visual and spatial continuity between education and play.

Children can transition quickly between indoor activities and outdoor movement.

Shade provided by the surrounding structure also improves comfort while preserving openness.

The sandpit therefore acts as a threshold space, neither completely inside nor entirely exposed.

That intermediate condition is characteristic of the broader design.

Climbing, Resting and Viewing as Part of One Play Route

On another edge of the site, a narrow sequence of platforms contains several different activities.

Climbing nets, climbing walls, monkey bars, rest areas, viewing platforms and slides are positioned along an elongated structure.

Instead of treating these activities as separate playground products, the design connects them into one architectural route.

Children move upward, across and downward through different spatial conditions.

Viewing platforms introduce another dimension by giving children elevated places from which to observe the playground.

This vertical circulation creates additional play opportunities despite the limited size of the site.

The architecture therefore expands the usable landscape not only horizontally but vertically.

An Outdoor Court for Multiple Forms of Recreation

A large court forms the most open recreational zone.

Although represented primarily as a mini basketball court, the designers envision it as a flexible surface capable of supporting other games such as cricket and football.

This multipurpose approach is consistent with the rest of the project.

Spaces are intentionally not restricted to a single activity.

A court can become a gathering area. A classroom can become a screening room. Modular furniture can become seating or storage. Platforms can support climbing, watching or resting.

The architecture gains value through reuse.

Landscape as an Invitation to Enter

The entrance is carefully considered as part of the overall play experience.

Landscape elements are positioned near the arrival area to create a welcoming threshold and encourage children to enter the playground.

Circulation routes are then organized to connect major activities efficiently.

Because the site is relatively compact, movement has to be carefully choreographed.

The project seeks to prevent unnecessary circulation while still allowing children to experience the complete sequence of learning and recreation spaces.

Landscape, architecture and movement therefore operate together rather than as separate systems.

A Human Scale Within a Dense Settlement

The perspective drawings demonstrate how the architecture fits within the surrounding settlement.

Instead of producing a monumental institution, BAMBOO BLOCK remains relatively low-rise and porous.

Bamboo structures, extended roofs, gardens and partially open walls soften the boundary between the playground and the neighbourhood.

From the street, the architecture appears as a collection of small interconnected volumes rather than one dominant block.

This scale is appropriate for children and helps preserve the informal character of the surrounding urban fabric.

Vegetation around entrances and play spaces further reduces the institutional quality of the complex.

The result is closer to a small community landscape than a conventional educational facility.

Architecture That Can Change With Its Users

The strongest aspect of BAMBOO BLOCK is its refusal to treat architecture as fixed.

Buildings are modular.

Furniture is modular.

Rooms are flexible.

Playgrounds are multifunctional.

Materials are straightforward to assemble and potentially repair.

This flexibility creates an architectural system capable of responding to different activities, age groups and community needs.

For refugee environments, where permanence cannot always be assumed, such adaptability becomes especially significant.

Rather than designing one ideal configuration, the project establishes rules that can generate multiple configurations.

That distinction transforms the proposal from a single playground into a replicable design strategy.

Sustainable Architecture as Social Infrastructure

BAMBOO BLOCK demonstrates how sustainable architecture can address more than environmental performance.

Its sustainability lies equally in its social usefulness.

The project creates places to study, play, communicate, rest and gather. It recognizes that infrastructure for children should support emotional and social development alongside physical activity.

Its material strategy uses bamboo, earth, straw and wood to make construction more accessible.

Its modular organization allows architecture to change over time.

Its indoor-outdoor spaces offer both shelter and openness.

Together, these systems create a playground designed not merely for recreation but for everyday community life.

As a Shortlisted entry of Re-imagining Play 2020, BAMBOO BLOCK presents play as an architectural question.

How can limited land generate many experiences?

How can buildings support both education and recreation?

How can construction remain affordable while still producing meaningful environments?

And how can children gain greater agency over the spaces they occupy?

BBM Group A responds through a deliberately simple system of modular spaces, movable furniture and locally sourced materials.

The result is an architecture where play is not added after construction.

Play determines the construction itself.

BAMBOO BLOCK proposes a thoughtful model for sustainable architecture in refugee communities, combining modular construction, adaptable learning spaces and low-cost natural materials within a compact playground.

Its 2 x 2 metre architectural modules establish a repeatable system, while smaller furniture modules allow interiors to be continually rearranged. Bamboo structures, earth walls and lightweight roofing create an architecture that is economical, shaded and closely tied to local material availability.

Most importantly, the project treats children as active participants in their environment.

Classrooms can expand. Furniture can change configuration. Play structures become routes. Indoor and outdoor spaces overlap.

Through these strategies, BBM Group A transforms a constrained site into a flexible environment for education, recreation and community interaction.
