Conexión: Biophilic Design Reimagines High-Rise Living in Hong Kong
Conexión reimagines high-rise living in Hong Kong through biophilic design, green facades, shared spaces, daylight, water and nature within.
In one of the world's most intensely urbanized environments, Conexión proposes a different relationship between high-rise architecture and the natural world. Conceived as an 11-level mixed-use building in Kowloon, Hong Kong, the project uses biophilic design as its principal architectural strategy, transforming vegetation, daylight, water, materiality, airflow and spatial experience into fundamental components of everyday urban life.
The project is designed by Deyanira Areli Bautista Apaseo, CAROL MELISSA GARCIA RANGEL and Aurora Celeste Espinoza Lerma. Conexión was selected as a Shortlisted entry of Abode, an architectural competition exploring new approaches to contemporary habitation.

Rather than treating greenery as a decorative layer added after the architecture has been formed, Conexión attempts to integrate nature into the spatial, environmental and material logic of the building itself. Its twin volumes, vegetated facades, connecting bridge, open spaces and residential environments form a vertical ecosystem where architecture becomes a mediator between urban density and human wellbeing.


Biophilic Design as an Architectural Framework
The central idea behind Conexión is contact.
The designers describe contact as the mechanism through which biophilia and the surrounding urban context can coexist. This becomes particularly important in Hong Kong, where extreme density, vertical development and extensive concrete construction often create a physical and perceptual distance between residents and natural environments.
Conexión responds by introducing nature at multiple scales.
Vegetation climbs portions of the exterior envelope. Green terraces interrupt the building mass. Natural textures enter domestic interiors. Daylight and ventilation become environmental design tools. Water is incorporated as a sensory element. Open spaces create moments of visual relief, while the bridge connecting the two building volumes becomes more than a circulation element. It serves as a shared ecological and social threshold between the towers.
This holistic understanding reflects a broader principle of contemporary biophilic architecture: connection to nature is most effective when embedded across spatial experience, material selection and environmental performance rather than restricted to superficial greenery. Recent architectural research similarly characterizes biophilic design as an approach capable of integrating ecological performance, human wellbeing and climate-responsive architecture.
Responding to the Density of Kowloon
The project begins with an extensive reading of its Kowloon context.
The approximately 2,591-square-meter site is positioned within an established network of main roads, public transportation, services and green spaces. The proposal works with a floor area ratio of 5, approximately 40 percent ground coverage, six-meter setbacks and a residential program of around 75 units.
These parameters place the scheme firmly within the realities of dense metropolitan development.
Instead of rejecting density, the project asks how density can become more humane.
The result is a compact vertical intervention that introduces environmental and sensory diversity within a relatively constrained footprint. The building therefore operates as a counterpoint to the repetition often associated with dense residential towers. Its identity emerges through changing vegetation, layered facades, recessed spaces, open circulation and a central connecting element.
The scheme demonstrates that biophilic design in high-rise architecture does not necessarily require abandoning the compact city. Nature can instead be woven vertically through the building.
Twin Towers Connected by Nature
The building is composed as two closely positioned vertical volumes connected through a central bridge.
This relationship gives architectural form to the project's title, Conexión.
The bridge establishes visual and physical communication between the two towers while creating an opportunity for vegetation, latticework, light and shared activity to occupy the space between them. The designers describe this element as a place where architecture and nature begin to merge.
The towers are deliberately offset rather than conceived as one monolithic block. This composition produces a stronger sense of depth while allowing the central connection to become visually prominent.
From a distance, the architecture appears increasingly overtaken by vegetation. Green surfaces run vertically along the facade and occupy terraces at multiple levels, visually softening the mass of the residential structure.
The resulting building is not intended to resemble a conventional glass or concrete residential tower with greenery simply attached to balconies. Instead, plants participate in the reading of the architecture itself.
A Living Green Facade
One of the project's strongest expressions of biophilic design is its envelope.
Vertical vegetation extends across substantial areas of the facade, establishing a dynamic relationship between constructed materials and living systems. Ivy and other climbing vegetation are envisioned as components capable of generating different shades of green across the exterior.
Because vegetation changes over time, the facade becomes visually less static.
Growth, light, humidity and seasonal variation can continually modify its appearance. This provides a contrast with conventional high-rise envelopes, whose material expression usually remains largely fixed after construction.
The designers also seek to reduce the dominance of exposed concrete through a broader material palette. Regional materials, vegetation, ecological construction techniques and natural textures are proposed as components of a more diverse building envelope.
In this sense, the facade operates simultaneously as architecture, environmental interface and visual representation of the project's ecological ambitions.
Nature in the Space
Conexión organizes its biophilic strategy through principles including Nature in the Space, Natural Analogues and Nature of the Space.
Nature in the Space emphasizes direct sensory relationships with vegetation, water, light and environmental variation.
Views toward greenery establish a visual relationship with nature, while vegetation also introduces texture, movement and potentially changing acoustic conditions. Open areas allow residents to experience differences in sunlight, shadow, airflow, temperature and humidity rather than remaining continuously within mechanically controlled interiors.
Water further enriches the sensory environment through both visual and auditory experience.
Together, these interventions transform nature from something observed at a distance into something encountered throughout movement across the building.
Natural Analogues and Materiality
The project's connection to nature also extends into its materials and patterns.
Biomorphic geometries are proposed throughout interior and exterior spaces as abstract references to forms and textures found in natural systems. This creates another level of biophilic experience beyond direct vegetation.
On the building envelope, planting is allowed to follow a relatively free path across the facade rather than being confined entirely within rigid geometric boundaries.
At the connecting bridge, natural growth interacts with architectural latticework. The contrast between vegetation and constructed framework creates a space where natural and artificial systems are intentionally intertwined.
Inside the apartments, rattan furniture introduces another material connection to nature. Vertical gardens further reinforce this relationship, bringing greenery closer to the scale of domestic occupation.
These decisions suggest that biophilia is not understood solely as planting. Material tactility, pattern, spatial hierarchy and sensory variation all contribute to the experience.

Daylight, Air and Resident Wellbeing
The designers place particular emphasis on the relationship between biophilic design and wellbeing.
Their position is straightforward: architecture that provides better air quality, better natural lighting and frequent interaction with vegetation can create healthier and calmer environments for residents.
The building therefore seeks to capitalize on windows, openings and other daylight strategies to reduce dependence on artificial illumination during suitable periods.
Natural ventilation and passive environmental systems are considered alongside active air-conditioning strategies. This hybrid approach acknowledges Hong Kong's climate while attempting to reduce unnecessary energy consumption.
The project also proposes spaces of differing character and openness. Some encourage interaction, while others create opportunities for privacy, retreat and contemplation.
This variation is significant. Wellbeing in residential architecture depends not only on access to communal space but also on having control over one's level of interaction and exposure.
Water and Resource Management
Sustainability extends beyond vegetation.
The site analysis identifies water management as an important infrastructure challenge and proposes a combination of strategies including rainwater harvesting, greywater reuse and sewage treatment.
These systems connect the visible ecological character of the project with less visible environmental infrastructure.
Energy strategies similarly include greater use of natural lighting, passive environmental techniques and technologies capable of utilizing available natural resources.
This strengthens the project concept. A genuinely ecological residential building cannot rely exclusively on an image of greenery. Resource consumption, water cycles, energy performance and building systems must form part of the same architectural conversation.
Smart Infrastructure Within a Natural Environment
Interestingly, Conexión does not present nature and technology as opposing ideas.
Alongside its biophilic architecture, the proposal incorporates smart-building principles, telecommunications infrastructure and home automation.
The result is a vision in which digital intelligence and ecological thinking coexist.
Technology can regulate environmental conditions, improve resource efficiency and support residential convenience, while vegetation, daylight, natural materials and water provide the sensory qualities associated with healthier environments.
This combination is particularly relevant to the future of high-density housing, where environmental performance increasingly depends on both passive architectural intelligence and responsive building systems.
Creating Community Through Connection
The word "connection" operates on several levels throughout the project.
There is connection between the two towers.
There is connection between residents.
There is connection between indoor and outdoor environments.
There is connection between architecture and vegetation.
There is also a broader attempt to reconnect dense urban habitation with ecological processes that are often pushed outside the contemporary city.
Shared recreational spaces and the central bridge provide opportunities for residents to encounter one another. These elements prevent the residential tower from becoming a collection of isolated apartments stacked vertically.
Instead, circulation and communal areas become part of the social architecture.
This dimension reinforces the project's biophilic agenda because the experience of nature becomes collective rather than exclusively private.
A Different Model for High-Rise Residential Architecture
The greatest challenge acknowledged by the designers was their limited previous experience designing a skyscraper while simultaneously attempting to incorporate biophilic principles throughout the building.
That challenge ultimately defines the project's architectural inquiry.
How can a high-rise remain dense without becoming disconnected from nature?
How can vegetation become architecture rather than ornament?
How can shared space, daylight, water, materiality and environmental systems work together inside a vertical residential typology?
Conexión responds through a layered proposal rather than a single spectacular gesture.
Its vegetated facades create constant visual contact with nature. Its twin-tower composition establishes porosity within the building mass. Its bridge creates an identifiable communal heart. Natural materials extend ecological thinking into interior environments. Water, daylight and airflow provide additional sensory experiences. Smart systems and resource-management strategies address the environmental performance behind the architecture.
Conexión and the Future of Biophilic Architecture
As cities continue to densify, the challenge facing architecture is increasingly not whether urban populations will live vertically, but what the quality of that vertical life will become.
Conexión argues that high-rise residential architecture can remain compact while offering a richer relationship with natural systems.
Its significance lies in treating biophilic design as more than a visual style. Nature influences the envelope, shared circulation, domestic interiors, environmental infrastructure and overall spatial hierarchy of the building.
The green facade is therefore only the most immediately visible expression of a much broader idea.
Through vegetation, natural materials, daylight, airflow, water, communal spaces and ecological systems, Conexión proposes a residential environment where nature becomes an everyday presence within the vertical city.
In the dense urban fabric of Kowloon, that approach offers an alternative vision for future housing: one where architecture does not separate urban life from nature, but actively constructs new forms of connection between them.
