Doldam House: A Tranquil Retreat in the Heart of Nature

Nestled within the breathtaking landscape of Mt. Seorak National Park in Sokcho-si, South Korea, the Doldam House by one-aftr offers a serene and immersive living experience. The park, famous for its vibrant fall foliage and striking boulder formations, serves as the primary inspiration for the house's design. With a strong focus on sustainability, the project reflects the dynamic transformation of the natural world, capturing the shifting seasons through architectural expression.

The 88 m² residence draws on the textures and forms of the surrounding landscape, with its design inspired by the natural rock formations and the seasonal changes of the trees. In a thoughtful nod to the local environment, the construction process involved recycling excavated rocks to create a stone-filled front yard, which not only enhances the landscape but also supports plant growth. This innovative approach integrates the house seamlessly into its surroundings, maintaining a deep connection with nature.

Architectural Features: A Seamless Connection to the Outdoors

The Doldam House design emphasizes the seamless connection between interior and exterior spaces. One of the most striking features is the expansive front wall that serves as a barrier for privacy while simultaneously opening the front yard. The wall’s subtle shear creates a dynamic perspective, allowing the surrounding landscape to continuously shift as one moves around the building. The orange door leading to the courtyard acts as a functional element that regulates both daylight and visual exposure, giving tenants the ability to adjust their interaction with the natural world.

Inside, the open-plan layout consists of two rows of three 4-meter-wide spaces, carefully arranged to ensure functionality and flow. Each space is thoughtfully designed to support daily living needs while allowing for natural light and airflow to permeate the home. The integration of outdoor decks and courtyards on the southeast side further enhances the building’s connection to the environment. These areas bring the beauty of the surrounding trees into the home, creating a harmonious blend of indoor and outdoor living.
