Dream Organ: Immersive Architecture for Cinema, Memory, and Dreams
Dream Organ transforms cinema into immersive architecture, where mirrored organs, cave, sound, light, and memory shape a surreal film world.
Dream Organ is an experimental work of immersive architecture that reimagines the cinema building as a landscape of memory, projection, and collective experience. Designed by Yixuan Cai, Borou Yu, Jiajian Min, and Xiaoxiao Zhao, the project was recognized as an Editor’s Choice entry of Cinema Box 2020. It presents cinema not as a closed room for watching films, but as a spatial organism where dreams, sound, light, movement, and consciousness become part of the architectural experience.
Inspired by Bernard Stiegler’s theory of organology and arki-cinema, Dream Organ explores the relationship between cinema and dreams, consciousness and the unconscious. The project begins from the idea that cinema is not only an image on a screen. It is also memory, perception, body movement, atmosphere, production, and ritual. Through twenty vertical “organs” and a large public “cave,” the proposal transforms film culture into a layered architectural journey.
The result is a land-art film center set within a vast desert landscape. Its mirrored towers rise from a circular platform like abstract instruments, reflecting sand, sky, and light. Below them, the cave acts as a public ground for festivals, events, screenings, and gathering. Together, the organs and the cave create a cinematic world where the visitor does not simply watch a film, but enters the dream mechanism behind cinema itself.


A Film Center Designed as Immersive Architecture
The central strength of Dream Organ lies in its refusal to treat cinema architecture as a conventional theater box. Instead of arranging seats in front of a screen, the project breaks the film experience into multiple sensory and technical components. These components become spatial elements.
The design is composed of two major parts: the organs and the cave. The organs are vertical structures that float above the cave and contain the processes of film production, exhibition, sound, projection, motion capture, archive, and performance. The cave forms the public base, holding open-air theater spaces, restaurants, cafes, multipurpose rooms, press areas, auditoriums, and gala spaces.
This dual structure gives the project a powerful architectural metaphor. The cave represents the origin of cinema, linking the project to prehistoric caves where carvings, shadows, firelight, and movement created early spatial narratives. The organs represent the contemporary and future apparatus of cinema, including cameras, microphones, projectors, screens, holograms, archives, and immersive projection systems.
Through this contrast, Dream Organ becomes a work of immersive architecture that connects the primitive, the technological, and the dreamlike.
The Cave as the Origin of Cinematic Space
The cave is the emotional and symbolic heart of the project. In the design narrative, prehistoric caves are understood as the origins of film. Ancient carvings and wall paintings created spatialized sequences of movement, much like early cinematic frames. As visitors moved through these spaces, images appeared to shift, creating a relationship between body, story, and surface.
Dream Organ reinterprets this idea through a contemporary public cave. It is not a hidden underground chamber, but a large communal landscape where people gather beneath the organs. It contains spaces for open theater, restaurants, cafes, multipurpose events, gala functions, press rooms, and auditoriums. The cave becomes both a civic platform and a dream chamber.
In the night view, the cave glows with soft blue light, fog, and reflections. The ground appears fluid, almost like a digital terrain. Visitors move through paths beneath the suspended organs, surrounded by projections, sound, and changing light. This atmosphere turns the cave into a space of dreams and festival, where cinema becomes collective and physical.
The cave is not only a support system for the building above. It is the place where the audience enters the unconscious world of cinema.
The Organs: Twenty Towers of Film Experience
Above the cave, twenty vertical organs rise as sculptural, pyramid-like structures. Their mirrored surfaces reflect the desert and sky, creating a shifting exterior that changes with time, weather, and movement. These organs are not simple exhibition rooms. They are architectural machines that reveal the hidden logic of filmmaking and cinematic production.
Each organ contains a different part of the film experience. Some are connected to archives and collective narratives. Others contain writing labs, motion capture, immersive projection, sound design, lighting design, green screen production, and post-production activities. The project turns the film center into an active process rather than a passive gallery.
The diagrams show several distinct organs, including the Theater of Historical Now, the Light Stage, the Sound Dome, the Collage Post Production Studio, and the 3D Immersive Projection space. Each of these structures transforms a technical part of cinema into an architectural event.
In the Theater of Historical Now, visitors encounter balcony seating, motion capture, motion drawing, circular ramps, and projection surfaces. In the Light Stage, mirrors reflect exterior and interior views while screens multiply perspectives. In the Sound Dome, microphones, speakers, projectors, lenses, and sound boards create an acoustic chamber. These spaces expose the making of cinema instead of hiding it behind the screen.
This is where Dream Organ becomes highly relevant to contemporary immersive architecture. It uses architectural form to make invisible cinematic systems visible.
Cinema as Memory, Archive, and Dream
Dream Organ is not only about spectacle. Its conceptual foundation is rooted in memory. The project draws from Stiegler’s theory to explore how cinema operates through retention, recollection, and projection. The submitted diagrams refer to primary, secondary, and tertiary retention, suggesting a spatial translation of how experience becomes memory and how memory becomes media.
The program supports this idea through a sequence of narrative and archival spaces. The press room, event space, digital archive, projection space, documentation rooms, writing labs, narrative archive, motion capture, shooting areas, green screen collage, lighting design, and sound design are all connected as parts of a larger cinematic ecology.
This makes the project more than a film museum. It is an architectural system for collecting, producing, translating, and projecting memory. The visitor moves through a world where stories are written, recorded, edited, stored, performed, and reimagined.
The design also challenges the boundary between viewer and maker. In a conventional cinema, the audience sees the final film. In Dream Organ, the audience sees the process. They encounter the machinery of image-making, the labor of sound, the staging of movement, and the archive of memory. The building becomes a living diagram of cinema.



A Desert Land Art Film Center
The exterior imagery presents Dream Organ as a monumental land-art intervention. The circular platform sits within a desert landscape, while the organs rise like a cluster of reflective fragments. Their black and metallic surfaces capture the surrounding dunes and sunlight, making the building appear both present and unstable.
This instability is important. Cinema is also unstable. It is made of light, projection, illusion, memory, and time. Dream Organ translates these qualities into architectural form. The towers do not behave like static buildings. They appear like instruments, lenses, mirrors, and dream objects.
The desert setting intensifies this effect. Against the open horizon, the building reads as a mirage. During the day, sunlight reflects across the organs. At night, the cave glows from within. Fog and light soften the edges between structure and atmosphere. The architecture becomes a cinematic scene before any film is even screened.
As an example of immersive architecture, Dream Organ uses site, atmosphere, program, and form to create a total sensory environment.
Reimagining the Cinema Box
The title of the competition, Cinema Box 2020, becomes an important point of contrast. Dream Organ does not accept the cinema box as a sealed container. It opens the box, fragments it, and distributes its functions across a field of organs and public spaces.
The screen is no longer the only focus. Projection can happen on surfaces, in the cave, through holograms, across stages, and within immersive rooms. Sound is not only heard from theater speakers, but studied through the Sound Dome. Movement is not only performed by actors, but captured, drawn, and transformed through architectural circulation. Archives are not stored away, but integrated into the visitor’s path.
This approach makes the project a strong conceptual proposal for future cultural architecture. It suggests that cinemas, museums, and film centers can become interactive environments where audiences engage with the full life cycle of image-making.
Why Dream Organ Matters
Dream Organ matters because it expands the meaning of cinema architecture. It proposes a building that is not limited to screening, seating, and circulation. Instead, it creates a spatial system where film is experienced as dream, archive, production, ritual, and public gathering.
The project’s strongest idea is its fusion of primitive and futuristic references. The cave links cinema to ancient image-making and collective storytelling. The organs connect it to digital production, immersive projection, and contemporary media culture. Between these two elements, the visitor experiences cinema as a continuum, from cave painting to hologram, from shadow to digital projection, from memory to dream.
As an Editor’s Choice entry of Cinema Box 2020, Dream Organ by Yixuan Cai, Borou Yu, Jiajian Min, and Xiaoxiao Zhao stands out for its ambitious interpretation of cinema as architecture.
