Nestled on a serene hillside in Fayston, Vermont, Elemental House by Elizabeth Herrmann Architecture + Design is a striking example of sustainable architecture that seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings. A Home Rooted in Nature

The homeowners envisioned a retreat where they could unwind with family and friends, immersing themselves in the beauty of the forested landscape. They sought a design that was both elegant and understated, yet rugged enough to withstand daily life and the curiosity of children exploring the outdoors.

To achieve this, the architectural approach focused on low-maintenance materials and timeless design elements. The house sits at the edge of the woods, carefully positioned to take advantage of the varying terrain while maximizing long-range views and natural light.

Architectural Concept: Form Meets Function

The 5000-square-foot home consists of three interconnected gabled volumes, clad in nearly black, charred and stained siding from Nakamoto Forestry. These structures are embedded into the slope, creating a subtle yet dynamic composition. A glazed entryway links the L-shaped layout, offering a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces.

By balancing introversion and extroversion, the design ensures privacy where needed while embracing openness on the downhill side, where expansive glass surfaces invite in panoramic mountain views and abundant daylight.
