Elemental House: A Harmonious Blend of Nature and Architecture
Elemental House blends sustainable design with nature, featuring charred wood cladding, panoramic views, dynamic interiors, and organic, low-maintenance materials.
Nestled on a serene hillside in Fayston, Vermont, Elemental House by Elizabeth Herrmann Architecture + Design is a striking example of sustainable architecture that seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings. With breathtaking views of the Green Mountains, this thoughtfully designed residence embodies simplicity, durability, and a deep connection to nature.

A Home Rooted in Nature
The homeowners envisioned a retreat where they could unwind with family and friends, immersing themselves in the beauty of the forested landscape. They sought a design that was both elegant and understated, yet rugged enough to withstand daily life and the curiosity of children exploring the outdoors.
To achieve this, the architectural approach focused on low-maintenance materials and timeless design elements. The house sits at the edge of the woods, carefully positioned to take advantage of the varying terrain while maximizing long-range views and natural light.

Architectural Concept: Form Meets Function
The 5000-square-foot home consists of three interconnected gabled volumes, clad in nearly black, charred and stained siding from Nakamoto Forestry. These structures are embedded into the slope, creating a subtle yet dynamic composition. A glazed entryway links the L-shaped layout, offering a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces.
By balancing introversion and extroversion, the design ensures privacy where needed while embracing openness on the downhill side, where expansive glass surfaces invite in panoramic mountain views and abundant daylight. The result is a home that feels both grounded and weightless, blending effortlessly with the surrounding woodland.

Dynamic Interiors with a Natural Palette
Drawing inspiration from the shifting topography and organic movement of the forest, the interior spaces reflect a sense of rhythm and discovery. Rooms unfold through offset geometries, revealing carefully framed vistas that encourage exploration and contemplation. The layout avoids rigid symmetry, instead offering a fluid experience with unexpected visual connections.
Materiality plays a crucial role in defining the home's aesthetic. The interior palette is textural and earthy, featuring:
- Reclaimed wood and handmade tile, celebrating natural imperfections
- Blackened steel and concrete, adding depth and contrast
- Stone and offset steel staircases, echoing the irregularity of nature
One of the standout features is the custom-designed steel staircase, which spans all three levels. Its rod balusters, arranged with subtle irregularity, evoke a gentle sense of movement—mirroring the organic patterns found in the surrounding landscape.

Sustainable and Thoughtful Design
Beyond aesthetics, Elemental House prioritizes sustainability and efficiency. Its strategic placement maximizes passive solar heating, while the durable, low-maintenance materials reduce long-term upkeep. The home embraces a philosophy of simplicity, resilience, and harmony with nature, making it not just a residence, but an enduring sanctuary.
Elemental House exemplifies a masterful fusion of modern architecture and natural beauty. Designed with intention and sensitivity to its environment, it stands as a testament to how contemporary homes can be both visually compelling and deeply connected to the landscape.
