Elysian Fields Apartments: Innovative Multifamily Living in Echo Park, Los Angeles
Elysian Fields Apartments in Echo Park, Los Angeles offers unique, sustainable live/work units with double-height spaces, vibrant facades, and integrated green courtyards.
Designed by Warren Techentin Architecture, the Elysian Fields Apartments offer a bold reimagining of multifamily living in the vibrant Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. Spanning 17,755 ft², the project responds to a city dominated by single-family homes, aiming to deliver the flexibility, openness, and connection to nature often associated with traditional houses, while embracing the unique energy of urban apartment life. Completed in 2020, this mixed-use residential building provides a diverse range of live/work units and thoughtfully curated outdoor spaces, making it a dynamic and socially engaging addition to the neighborhood.

Diverse Units and Flexible Living
The Elysian Fields Apartments consist of 27 live/work units, ranging from compact 580-square-foot micro-units to expansive 1,375-square-foot three-bedroom lofts. Each apartment is uniquely designed, featuring extra-large windows, double-height ceilings, and private balconies or patios, allowing residents to personalize their living experience. The variety of unit types ensures accessibility for a wide demographic, from young professionals and artists to families seeking urban convenience.

Contextual and Playful Facade Design
Each building elevation interacts with its surroundings differently, taking inspiration from the existing urban fabric while asserting a fresh, contemporary identity. The west façade along Sunset Boulevard features a gently curved perforated aluminum skin, fabricated by Arktura, which creates a solar-shaded “second skin” while visually unifying the street edge. Large, sculptural apertures reveal glimpses of units behind the screen, linking residents to the vibrant street below.
The north façade, painted black, rises from the hillside and is articulated with playful pink cruciform geometries and staggered window arrangements, reflecting the building’s internal double-height spaces. On the south side, yellow-painted walls are softened with cedar screens, referencing nearby storefronts. The east façade catches the warm morning sunlight, painted white to enhance brightness and openness. Together, these façades celebrate contextual responsiveness, urban integration, and visual diversity.

Landscape Integration and Sustainable Design
At the heart of the project lies a central courtyard, designed as a social hub and rainwater filtration system, surrounded by miniature fruit trees and seasonal plantings. Additional greenery, including herbs, vegetables, and flowering plants, is incorporated along building perimeters, fostering a connection to nature and enhancing sustainability.
The project integrates environmentally conscious strategies such as passive shading, optimized natural lighting, and exterior solar screens, creating a balance between aesthetics, comfort, and energy efficiency. The building design demonstrates modern urban sustainability, combining social, ecological, and aesthetic considerations to redefine multifamily living in Los Angeles.

Interior Design: Open, Flexible, and Bright
Inside, every unit offers a unique spatial experience, with varied floor plans emphasizing openness, circulation, and flexibility. The double-height spaces, oversized windows, and private terraces allow natural light to penetrate deeply, creating dynamic environments for living, working, and socializing. By blending artful design, functional flexibility, and a strong connection to the outdoors, the Elysian Fields Apartments redefine what urban apartment living can look like in a culturally rich and historically layered neighborhood like Echo Park.

A New Standard for Urban Living
Elysian Fields Apartments set a precedent for multifamily residential architecture in Los Angeles, offering residents a harmonious combination of privacy, community, and connection to the city and nature. Through innovative design, sustainable features, and contextual awareness, the project elevates apartment living while contributing meaningfully to Echo Park’s urban identity. This project exemplifies a forward-thinking approach to modern urban dwellings, merging flexibility, sustainability, and artistic expression into a vibrant residential experience.
