en-LIGHT-en: A New Era in Futuristic Library Architecture
A luminous library in Warsaw that turns memory into monument and past into hope through futuristic architecture and design.
Project by Rose Madrazo
Shortlisted entry of Libgen 2019
In the heart of Warsaw, where history is layered with moments of resilience and pain, a striking vision of futuristic library architecture rises from the ashes of memory. Titled "en-LIGHT-en," this conceptual public library by Rose Madrazo is more than a building; it is a cultural beacon that merges memory, innovation, and urban identity.

Architecture as Commemoration and Innovation
Warsaw is a city that has witnessed the extremes of light and darkness—from independence to the Jewish ghettos of WWII. "en-LIGHT-en" proposes a vertical library that does not just archive books, but embodies the historical continuum of the city. The design uses architectural language to commemorate the past while illuminating a future of knowledge, inclusion, and intellectual freedom.
The concept redefines what a library means in the 21st century. It becomes a living monument—a milestone in urban education and a memorial to the human spirit. The use of translucent vertical panels symbolizes both openness and resilience, while layered visual textures evoke Warsaw's historical palimpsest.
Urban Context and Symbolism
Situated on a competition site in central Warsaw, covering 16,541m², the proposed structure acts as a civic landmark. Its verticality stands in stark contrast to the horizontal sprawl of traditional library models, emphasizing ascension, growth, and enlightenment.
At its core, "en-LIGHT-en" is structured around dualities: past and future, memory and innovation, light and shadow. These contrasts are not just conceptual but spatially articulated through a rhythmic play of materials, light wells, and thematic zoning. The timeline of Warsaw's political and cultural evolution—from the First World War to Poland's EU membership—is subtly woven into the architectural narrative.
Functional and Symbolic Zoning
The library tower is composed of floors dedicated to six major disciplines: History, Engineering, Technology, Nature and Science, Arts, and Economics and Business. Each level is a thematic realm, offering curated content, interactive displays, and immersive learning spaces.
Public access begins at the lobby, with transparent volumes inviting movement and reflection. The spatial journey is not just physical but intellectual—a vertical pilgrimage through human achievement and historical insight. The roof plan allows for communal gatherings, lectures, and events that foster discourse and civic participation.
Memorial and Milestone
This futuristic library architecture is not limited to utility. It is a vessel of remembrance and transformation. As a memorial, it preserves the scars and lessons of history. As a milestone, it marks Warsaw’s commitment to education, democratic values, and cultural resilience.
"en-LIGHT-en" offers a visionary blueprint for what libraries can become: sanctuaries of knowledge that bridge the past and the future, and architectural landmarks that narrate civic identity. Through the lens of futuristic library architecture, it redefines public space as a luminous vessel of memory, intellect, and collective hope.
