UNIUNI
UNI published Review under Prototyping, Research on Nov 15, 2021

Over this journey of half a decade, UNI has evolved into a unique web platform for architects and design enthusiasts over the world. Through its wide variety of thought-provoking design problems, it churns out innovative design solutions from creatives globally. We celebrate the spirit, initiative, and creative thinking by minds around the world, whose contributions may very well drive great developments in the future of architecture and design. One of UNI's purposes has been to serve as a place where possibly revolutionary ideas can be put out there for the world to see.

With that in mind, UNI's Yearbook, which was thoughtfully renamed 'Design Explorer' last year, is an important milestone in this journey, to put together the best and most inspiring ideas that we came across this year.

Because great ideas must be preserved for posterity!

The yearbook documents and honors the most meritorious projects from upcoming architects and designers that we received over the last year. Not to forget, each and every person who participated, associated with and contributed to furthering UNI's intents deserve immense credit and acknowledgement. The ever-growing community that we have been able to create, of emerging architects and designers, continue to prove their mettle by competing in various challenges globally across relevant design briefs in the context of today.

The scope and expanse of design problems at UNI cover everything from small-scale product design to global urban issues. From the realities of today to the possibilities of the future, we are addressing an extensive range, and we shall continue to push the envelope further over the coming decades.

Change is the only constant.

With every passing era, architecture and design have undergone drastic transformations, like any other discipline. The built environment is inseparably linked with the social, cultural, economic, ecological contexts it belongs to, and much more. As we advance ahead from this digital age, a lot is changing at a faster pace than we find ourselves prepared for. As designers and users of this environment, our relationships with these problems are ever-transforming.

With its variety of initiatives, UNI tries to be a catalyst in generating solutions that think ahead to prepare us for the coming times. At the same time, history has invaluable lessons to teach, and we try to connect the threads from our past, to the present, extending towards the future.

A single idea can inspire a thousand.

The goal of Uni Design Explorer is to provide this vast and unparalleled diversity of examples to curious designers and learners from fields like architecture, product design, graphic design, fashion, and many more to come on a common platform. This book does not stop at the most outstanding projects that came our way. It builds on the exceptional processes that go under the hood to make them happen.

Like each passing year, we strive to upgrade and improve across all aspects of Uni. With the same committment, the latest book series of UNI Design Explorer aims to reach out as an exemplary, world-standard design resource for our readers, contributors, and designers over the globe

What's new?

Building upon the changes brought about from the previous edition of the yearbook, this year's UNI Design Explorer will also feature:

1. The New Name

Last year, we renamed the book series to UNI Design Explorer from UNI Design Yearbook 2021 - with the notion that design is timeless as it should be. Instead of a year by year compilation that loses relevance over time, we dropped the years from the name to align to the idea of building over the past.

2. In their own words

We spoke to our creators to contribute significant parts of the yearbook which is 100% unique to this version - Not available in any other formats or web.

3. Every project featured

We covered almost every project that made it into the hall of fame on UNI. Despite the number of projects we went ahead to publish every winning project to give a more holistic view of the design caliber found on UNI.

4. Digital-Physical Connect

We brought in QR codes for all of these projects that give you detailed access to full project details on the website. While the internet is distracting and books offer focus, this mixed medium brings in the best of both worlds.

5. Volumizing

This edition of the UNI Design Explorer is introduced in a series of 9 volumes, with each volume dedicated to a particular category. This way you can have a more categorical access with the design projects falling under:

•  V1: Micro - projects from challenges with a relatively smaller scope.

•  V2: Community - projects from social and community-based problems.

•  V3: Cultural - projects from competitions corresponding to culture, society, history, and traditions.

•  V4: Exploratory - projects that push the present conventions and rely on imagination and innovative thinking for future and other possibilities.

•  V5, V6: Housing - projects proposing solutions for various issues under the housing typology.

•  V7: Adaptive Reuse & Education - thoughtful solutions towards adaptive reuse, and education related projects.

•  V8: Hospitality - all projects belonging to the hospitality genre; hotels, resorts, lodges, etc.

•  V9:  Awards - winning entries for the awards hosted by UNI, such as UniATA, UPA, Education '20, Visualisation '20, and others.

These volumes not only keep the pricing in check, and make it easier to reach our readers, but also allows you to choose and buy what you need.

The 9 volumes of Uni Design Explorer introduce you to a publication with beautifully illustrated presentation boards, providing a compelling visual story alongside the invaluable information with detailed descriptions. It imparts technical insight into the design processes through individual journeys across a multitude of design problems.

All in all, the book series showcases around 60 competitions + 9 awards with the most innovative and inspiring projects we received in our past year. It has been designed to offer readers complete, comprehensive, and most importantly - relevant, architectural design ideas.
