Designed as a wine production and accommodation complex, the project does not sit on the landscape as an object. Instead, it cuts into the terrain, follows the natural slope, and creates a sequence of green terraces that allow visitors to move through the site as part of the land itself.
The project is by Stanisław Czujkowski and Kinga Gawlik and was recognized as an Editor’s Choice entry of Pour 2020. It presents a refined vision for a winery resort where architecture supports both production and experience. Visitors can stay close to the vineyards, walk across planted roofs, enjoy wine, rest in courtyards, dine outdoors, and sleep beneath the stars. The building becomes less of a conventional hotel and more of a landscape journey.


Architecture Designed Through Cuts, Terraces, and Movement
The core design strategy of Green Path Village is based on cutting into the hill and using those cuts to form habitable terraces. Rather than constructing a compact resort block, the proposal spreads functions across five levels. Each level is connected through paths, ramps, open courtyards, and green surfaces that transform circulation into a scenic experience.
The diagrams show a process of shaping the land in stages: first by cutting and leveling the terrain, then by carving out courtyards, then by creating ramps between floors, and finally by placing guest rooms and infrastructure beneath the terraces. This design logic gives the complex its identity. The architecture is not imposed onto the hill. It is derived from the hill.
This makes Green Path Village especially relevant within sustainable architecture because it uses topography as a design resource. The terrain is not treated as an obstacle that must be flattened. Instead, it becomes the main organizing system for accommodation, winery operations, dining, leisure, and public movement.
A Winery, Hotel, and Landscape Experience in One Complex
Green Path Village combines the practical infrastructure of wine production with the atmospheric qualities of a retreat. The plans indicate a rich program distributed across five floors. The complex includes winery spaces, fermentation and maturation rooms, bottling and pressing zones, warehouses, staff areas, cold rooms, storage rooms, dining spaces, bars, a restaurant, a wine shop, guest rooms, common rooms, laundry areas, bathrooms, technical rooms, and visitor facilities.
This mix of functions allows the project to operate as both a working winery and an immersive wine resort. Guests are not simply accommodated near the vineyard. They are placed within the larger process of wine culture. The architecture supports production, tourism, leisure, and social gathering within one continuous system.
The result is a wine resort design that makes the act of staying, walking, tasting, and observing part of a single architectural narrative. Visitors can move through green terraces, encounter courtyards, enjoy panoramic views, and experience the winery as a lived environment.
Sustainable Architecture Through Landscape Integration
The strongest quality of Green Path Village is its integration with the landscape. The low, linear forms follow the natural contour lines, while the green roofs and terraces visually merge the architecture with the surrounding hills. From a distance, the project appears as a series of subtle cuts and paths rather than a dominant built mass.
This approach reduces the visual impact of the resort and strengthens its relationship with the vineyard setting. The architecture feels calm, horizontal, and grounded. The illustrations show long rooflines, planted surfaces, open-air paths, and framed views toward the mountains. These elements give the project a quiet presence, allowing nature to remain the central experience.
In this sense, Green Path Village is a compelling case for sustainable architecture not only as a technical discipline but as a spatial attitude. It demonstrates how buildings can respect terrain, frame natural views, and turn movement through the site into an ecological and sensory experience.
Courtyards as Social and Atmospheric Spaces
The project’s courtyards play an important role in creating communal life. By carving open spaces within the terraced structure, the design introduces areas for evening gatherings, dinners, parties, relaxation, and wine tasting. These courtyards prevent the complex from becoming a closed hospitality block. They give it a village-like structure, where paths, rooms, terraces, and shared spaces are interwoven.
The interior renderings show open, shaded areas beneath the curved terraces. These spaces have a muted, earthy atmosphere. Their scale suggests a calm environment for slow social interaction rather than commercial spectacle. The building becomes a frame for collective rituals: eating, drinking, walking, resting, and observing the landscape.
This is where the name Green Path Village becomes meaningful. The project is not only a resort with green roofs. It is organized around the idea of paths. These paths connect levels, guide visitors through the hill, and create moments of pause between built and natural spaces.
Guest Rooms Beneath the Green Terraces
One of the central spatial ideas is the placement of guest rooms beneath the terraces. This allows the roofs to function as accessible green surfaces while the accommodation remains embedded within the terrain. The plans show long bands of rooms arranged along curved lines, creating a rhythmic relationship between private units and the larger landscape form.
This strategy offers strong potential for privacy, thermal stability, and visual integration. At the same time, it raises one of the important questions identified by the jury: how can room privacy be guaranteed when visitors are encouraged to walk across or near the terraced paths?
Juror Alejandro García Pedrón praised the project’s integration with the territory through cuts in the land, noting that it shows respect for the landscape and enhances it. He also recognized the concept as a good idea for a hotel with a winery. However, he questioned whether the privacy of rooms is fully clear if people can walk in front of them.
This critique is valuable because it highlights a key challenge in landscape-based hospitality architecture. The more open and walkable the resort becomes, the more carefully it must manage thresholds between public paths, semi-private terraces, and private rooms.

Juror Reflections: Strengths and Areas for Development
Juror Anouk Legendre described the general concept as very interesting and noted that it fits well into the landscape. She also observed that the proposal makes a great plan. This is visible in the project’s diagrams and floor layouts, where the curved geometry, sectional strategy, and landscape integration are handled with clarity.
However, Legendre also raised two important concerns. She noted that the project does not yet generate strong interior spatial quality and that the bioclimatic aspect should have been developed further. This critique points toward the next stage of refinement for Green Path Village.
The project already has a strong landscape concept, but its environmental performance could become more explicit. For example, the design could further develop passive ventilation, solar orientation, daylight strategy, rainwater collection, thermal mass, natural cooling, and vineyard-based water management. These additions would strengthen the project’s position as sustainable architecture and make its ecological ambition more measurable.
A Powerful Concept with Room for Environmental Refinement
Green Path Village succeeds as a conceptual proposal because it turns a winery resort into a terrain-driven architectural experience. Its plan is elegant, its sectional logic is clear, and its integration into the hillside is convincing. The project imagines hospitality as a slow journey through land, wine, courtyards, terraces, and open views.
Its most powerful idea is the transformation of the hill into architecture. The building is not merely hidden underground, and it is not simply covered with greenery. Instead, it is shaped as a sequence of inhabitable cuts. These cuts generate paths, rooms, roofs, courtyards, and production areas. The outcome is both architectural and agricultural.
At the same time, the juror comments identify where the project could become even stronger. Interior atmosphere, guest privacy, and bioclimatic performance need deeper resolution. If these aspects were developed with the same care as the site strategy, Green Path Village could become a more complete model for eco-conscious hospitality design.
